“the other day”不是“另一天”，它到底是哪天?

the other day

the other day類似于recently，意思是“前兩天”、“不久以前”。“另外某一天”可以用another day來表示，它還含有“又一天，再一天”的意思。

I saw your brother the other day.

前幾天，我看到了你哥哥。

at some unspecified or unknown time

在某個未知的時間

從字面上看是美好的一天，但其引申義為“突然有一天”,“總有一天”。

I hadn't seen him for ten years. Then one fine day he just turned up.

我有10年沒見他了，突然有一天他出現(xiàn)了。

pass the time of day

pass the time of day是個習慣用語，意思為“寒暄”、“問候”、“聊一會”。

He stopped his car to pass the time of day with Mary.

他停下車與瑪麗寒暄(了一會)。
