生當如夏花

It is not growing like a tree

in bulk doth make man better be;

or standing long an oak, three hundred year,

to fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:

a lily of a day

is fairer far in may,

although it fall and die that night—

it was the plant and flower of light.

in small proportions we just beauties see;

and in short measures life may perfect be.

賞析

本杰明·瓊森(1572~1637)，英國文藝復興時期劇作家、詩人和演員，與莎士比亞處于同一時代。其最知名的戲劇作品為《福爾蓬奈》(Volpone)、《煉金士》(The Alchemist)和《巴塞洛繆集市》(Bartholomew Fair)。這首詩很容易讓我們想起1757年生的英國詩人威廉·布萊克的著名長詩《天真的預言》(Auguries of Innocence)頭四句：to see a world in a grain of sand/and a heaven in a wild flower/hold infinity in the palm of your hand/and eternity in an hour. 梁宗岱先生將這四句譯為：“一沙一世界，一花一天堂。雙手握無限，剎那是永恒。”瓊森的這首詩同樣微言大義，以草木喻人世，以一現(xiàn)曇花競地久天長。道理說來淺顯易懂，不復贅言。但就是這樣一個淺顯的道理，卻讓身處不同時代的兩位詩人通過詩作共同表達。不知詩人是否也有這樣的感慨：世代繁衍的人類中，有幾人能真正領(lǐng)悟這條穿越千年的偈語!
