生當(dāng)如夏花

It is not growing like a tree

in bulk doth make man better be;

or standing long an oak, three hundred year,

to fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:

a lily of a day

is fairer far in may,

although it fall and die that night—

it was the plant and flower of light.

in small proportions we just beauties see;

and in short measures life may perfect be.

賞析

本杰明·瓊森(1572~1637)，英國(guó)文藝復(fù)興時(shí)期劇作家、詩(shī)人和演員，與莎士比亞處于同一時(shí)代。其最知名的戲劇作品為《福爾蓬奈》(Volpone)、《煉金士》(The Alchemist)和《巴塞洛繆集市》(Bartholomew Fair)。這首詩(shī)很容易讓我們想起1757年生的英國(guó)詩(shī)人威廉·布萊克的著名長(zhǎng)詩(shī)《天真的預(yù)言》(Auguries of Innocence)頭四句：to see a world in a grain of sand/and a heaven in a wild flower/hold infinity in the palm of your hand/and eternity in an hour. 梁宗岱先生將這四句譯為：“一沙一世界，一花一天堂。雙手握無(wú)限，剎那是永恒。”瓊森的這首詩(shī)同樣微言大義，以草木喻人世，以一現(xiàn)曇花競(jìng)地久天長(zhǎng)。道理說(shuō)來(lái)淺顯易懂，不復(fù)贅言。但就是這樣一個(gè)淺顯的道理，卻讓身處不同時(shí)代的兩位詩(shī)人通過(guò)詩(shī)作共同表達(dá)。不知詩(shī)人是否也有這樣的感慨：世代繁衍的人類(lèi)中，有幾人能真正領(lǐng)悟這條穿越千年的偈語(yǔ)!
