第一幕

A country road. A tree.

鄉(xiāng)村小路。一棵樹。

Evening

黃昏。

Estragon，sitting on a low mound，is trying to take off his boot. He pulls at it with both hands，panting. He gives up，exhausted， rests，tries again. As before. Enter Vladimir

愛斯特拉岡坐在一個(gè)小土墩上努力脫靴子。他使勁地扯，直喘氣，還是沒脫下來。他歇了一會(huì)，又繼續(xù)。像以前一樣。這時(shí)，弗拉季米爾上場。

Estragon: (giving up again) Nothing to be done.

愛斯特拉岡:(又停下來)沒轍了。

Vladimir: (advancing with short, stiff strides, legs wide apart) I'm beginning to come round to that opinion. All my life I've tried to put it from me, saying Vladimir, be reasonable，you haven't yet tried everything. And I resumed the struggle. (He broods, musing on the struggle. Turning to Estragon.) So there you are again.

弗拉季米爾:(住硬地踩著短步，雙腿叉開)我要拿定主意了。一輩子我都在對自己說，理智些，弗拉季米爾，你還有好多事沒試過!這不，我又投入戰(zhàn)斗了(他陷入沉思，琢磨著自己剛剛說的“戰(zhàn)斗”二字轉(zhuǎn)向愛斯特拉岡)又是你。

Estragon: Am I?

愛斯特拉岡:是我?

Vladimir: I'm glad to see you back. I thought you were gone forever

弗拉季米爾:很高興你來了。我還以為你不會(huì)來了。

Estragon:Me too.

愛斯特拉岡:我也這么想。

Vladimir: Together again at last! We'll have to celebrate this. But how? (He reflects) Get up till I embrace you.

弗拉季米爾:最后又在一起了!一定要慶祝一下。但是怎么慶祝呢?(他思忖著)站起來，讓我抱抱你。

Estragon: (irritably) Not now, not now.

愛斯特拉岡:(生氣地)不，現(xiàn)在不。

Vladimir: (hurt, coldly) May one inquire where His Highness spent the night?

弗拉季米爾:(受到傷害，冷冷地)敢問閣下在哪兒過的夜?

Estragon:In a ditch.

愛斯特拉岡:溝里。

Vladimir: (admiringly) A ditch! Where?

弗拉季米爾:(崇拜地)溝里!哪兒?

Estragon:(without gesture) Over there.

愛斯特拉岡:(一動(dòng)不動(dòng))那邊。

Vladimir: And they didn't beat you?

弗拉季米爾:那他們沒有打你嗎?

Estragon:Beat me? Certainly they beat me.

愛斯特拉岡:打我，當(dāng)然打了!

Vladimir: The same lot as usual?

弗拉季米爾:還是一樣厲害嗎，

Estragon:The same? I don't know.

愛斯特拉岡:一樣的，我不知道。

Vladimir: When I think of it... all these years... but for me.. where would you be... (decisively) You'd be nothing more than a little heap of bones at the present minute，no doubt about it.

弗拉季米爾:我一想到這個(gè)……這些年一直……可對我……你又在哪兒……(肯定地)毫無疑問，你不過就是一小堆骨頭，就在眼下。

Estragon: And what of it?

愛斯特拉岡:那又怎么樣，

Vladimir: (gloomily) It's too much for one man. (pause cheerfully) On the other hand what's the good of losing heart now, that's what I say. We should have thought of it a million years ago.

弗拉季米爾:(沮喪地)對一個(gè)人來說，這太沉重了。(停了一下，高興地)另一方面，現(xiàn)在灰心有什么用呢，這是我說的。這個(gè)問題我們早在幾百年前就該考慮了。

Estragon: Ah stop blathering and help me off with this bloody thing.

Vladimir: Hand in hand from the top of the Eiffel Tower, among the first. We were respectable in those days. Now it's too late. They wouldn't even let us up. (Estragon tears at his boot) What are you doing?

Estragon:Taking off my boot. Did that never happen to you?

愛斯特拉岡:脫靴子。你就不脫嗎?

Vladimir: Boots must be taken off every day, I'm tired telling you that. Why don't you listen to me?

弗拉季米爾:靴子每天都得脫，這種事我才懶得說。你怎么不聽我的?

Estragon:(feebly) Help me!

愛斯特拉岡:(筋疲力盡地)幫幫我，

Vladimir: It hurts?

弗拉季米爾:疼嗎?

Estragon:(angrily) Hurts! He wants to know if it hurts!

愛斯特拉岡:(生氣地)當(dāng)然疼!這還用問，

Vladimir: (angrily) No one ever suffers but you. l don't count. I'd like to hear what you'd say if you had what/have.

弗拉季米爾:(生氣地)好像只有你一個(gè)人受痛苦，我不是人。我倒想聽聽如果是你受了我那樣的痛苦，你會(huì)說些什么。

Estragon:It hurts?

愛斯特拉岡:你也腳疼，

Vladimir: (angrily) Hurts! He wants to know if it hurts!

弗拉季米爾:(生氣地)當(dāng)然疼，這還用問，

Estragon:(pointing) You might button it all the same.

愛斯特拉岡:(手指著)那個(gè)還是要扣上。

Vladimir: (stooping) True. (He buttons his fly.) Never neglect the little things of life.

弗拉季米爾:(俯身)對。(扣上)不能忽視生活細(xì)節(jié)。

Estragon:What do you expect, you always wait till the last moment.

愛斯特拉岡:你在等什么，每次都要等到最后，

Vladimir: (musingly). The last moment..(He meditates) Hope deferred maketh the something sick, who said that?

弗拉季米爾:(琢磨著)最后……(陷入沉思)遲到的希望苦煞人!誰說的來著，

Estragon:Why don't you help me?

愛斯特拉岡:怎么不幫幫我?

Vladimir: Sometimes I feel it coming all the same. Then I go all queer. (He takes off his hat, peers inside it, feels about inside it, shakes it, puts it on again)How shall I say? Relieved and at the same time... (He searches for the word)... appalled, (with emphasis) AP-PAIIED. (He takes off his hat again，peers inside it) Funny. (He knocks on the crown as though to dislodge a foreign body，peers into it again，puts it on again.) Nothing to be done. (Estragon with a supreme effort succeeds in pulling off his boot. He peers inside it, feels about inside it, turns it upside down，shakes it, looks on the ground to see if anything has fallen out, finds nothing, feels inside it again，staring sightlessly before him.) Well?

弗拉季米爾:有時(shí)我發(fā)現(xiàn)希望來了，又覺得不對頭。(他摘下帽子，向里面瞅，在里面摸摸，搖搖，又戴上了)怎么說呢?解脫的同時(shí)……(一時(shí)語塞)……害怕。 (強(qiáng)調(diào))害—怕(他又摘下帽子，往里面瞅)可笑。(他敲敲帽頂，好像要趕走什么異物，又朝里面瞅，再帶上)沒法了。(愛斯特拉岡用盡力氣終于扯下靴子。他往里面瞅，摸摸里面，倒過來，搖了搖，抱著往地上看了看，但沒有東西掉下來，又在里面摸了摸，兩眼無神地盯著前方)怎么樣?

Estragon: Nothing.

愛斯特拉岡:沒有。

Vladimir: Show me.

弗拉季米爾:讓我看看。

Estragon: There's nothing to show.

愛斯特拉岡:沒什么好看的。

Vladimir: Try and put it on again.

弗拉季米爾:穿上再試試。

Estragon: (examining his foot) I'll air it for a bit.

愛斯特拉岡:(仔細(xì)檢查他的腳)讓它透會(huì)兒氣。

Vladimir: There's man all over for you，blaming on his boots the faults of his feet.

弗拉季米爾:人就是這樣，自己的腳有問題，還怪鞋不好。

Estragon: What?

愛斯特拉岡:呢，

Vladimir: Suppose we repented.

弗拉季米爾:我們懺悔吧。

Estragon: Repented what?

愛斯特拉岡:懺悔什么?

Vladimir: Oh..(He reflects.) We wouldn't have to go into the details.

弗拉季米爾:嗯……(他想了想)沒必要說那么具體吧。

Estragon: Our being born?(Vladimir breaks into a hearty laugh which he immediately stifles, his hand pressed to his pubis, his face contorted.)

愛斯特拉岡:我們的出生?(弗拉季米爾忽然大笑，趕緊又克制住，手按著肚子，面部扭曲。)

Vladimir: One daren't even laugh any more.

弗拉季米爾:以后連笑都不敢了。

Estragon: Dreadful privation.

愛斯特拉岡:真是可怕地剝奪!

Vladimir: Merely smile. (He smiles suddenly from ear to ear, keeps smiling, ceases as suddenly)It's not the same thing. Nothing to be done, (pause) Gogo.

弗拉季米爾:只能微笑。(他突然咧嘴一笑，笑著笑著突然又停住)兩碼事，沒法了。’(停頓)戈戈。

Estragon: (irritably) What is it?

愛斯特拉岡:(不耐煩地)什么事，

Vladimir: Did you ever read the Bible?

弗拉季米爾:你看過(圣經(jīng)》嗎?

Estragon: The Bible…(He reflects) I must have taken a look at it.

愛斯特拉岡:《圣經(jīng)》··一(他思索著)肯定看過一兩眼。

Vladimir: Do you remember the Gospels?

弗拉季米爾:記得“福音書”嗎?

Estragon; I remember the maps of the Holy Land. Coloured they were. Very pretty. The Dead Sea was pale blue. The very look of it made me thirsty. That's where we'll go, I used to say, that's where we'll go for our honeymoon. We'll swim.We'll be happy.

愛斯特拉岡:我記得圣地地圖。彩色的，他們很漂亮。死海是淡藍(lán)色的，見了就叫我口渴。那就是我們要去的，我過去常說，要去那兒過蜜月。我們要游泳，那會(huì)很開心。

Vladimir: You should have been a poet.

Estragon: I was. (gesture towards his rags) Isn't that obvious? (silence)

Vladimir: Where was I..How's your foot?

弗拉季米爾:我在哪兒……你腳怎樣?

Estragon: Swelling visibly.

愛斯特拉岡:腫得好大。

Vladimir: Ah yes，the two thieves. Do you remember the story?

弗拉季米爾:啊，對了，那兩個(gè)小偷。你記得那個(gè)故事嗎?

Estragon: No.

愛斯特拉岡:不記得了。

Vladimir: Shall I tell it to you?

弗拉季米爾:要我告訴你嗎，

Estragon: No.

愛斯特拉岡:不要。

Vladimir: It'll pass the time, (pause)Two thieves, crucified at the same time as our Saviour. One?

弗拉季米爾:這能打發(fā)時(shí)間。(停頓)兩個(gè)小偷一起被釘上十字架，就像我們那救世主。一個(gè)?

Estragon: Our what?

愛斯特拉岡:我們那什么?

Vladimir: Our Saviour.下wo thieves. One is supposed to have been saved and the other... (He searches for the contrary of saved)… damned.

弗拉季米爾:我們那救淤主。兩個(gè)小渝，一個(gè)得救了，另一個(gè)卻……(他在想得救的反義訶〕進(jìn)了地獄。

Estragon: Saved from what?

愛斯特拉岡:從哪兒救出來的?

Vladimir: Hell.

弗拉季米爾:地獄。

Estragon: I'm going. He does not move.

愛斯特拉岡:我要走，腳動(dòng)不了。

Vladimir: And yet…(pause》..how is it his is not boring you I hope? How is it that of the four Evangelists only one speaks of a thief being saved. The four of them were thereabouts? and only one speaks of a thief being saved，(pause) Come on，Didi，return the ball, can't you, once in a while?

弗拉季米爾:但是(停頓)一我想沒惹你煩吧?那怎么四個(gè)福音書傳教士中只有一個(gè)說其中一個(gè)小偷得救了呢?在場的有四個(gè)，只有一個(gè)提到一個(gè)小偷得救(停頓)好了，狄狄，說點(diǎn)什s不行嗎，也給點(diǎn)反應(yīng)?

Estragon: (with exaggerated enthusiasm) I find this really most extraordinarily interesting.

愛斯特拉瀏:(帶著夸張的熱情)我想這真是太不可思議了，有趣極了!

Vladimir: One out of four. Of the other three two don't mention any thieves at al! and the third says that both of them abused him.

弗拉季米爾:四個(gè)中只有一個(gè)。還有三個(gè)，兩個(gè)根本沒提到小偷，第三個(gè)說兩個(gè)愉都罵了他。

Estragon: Who?

愛斯特拉岡:誰，

Vladimir: What?

弗拉季米爾:什么?

Estragon: What's all this about? Abused who?

愛斯特拉岡:到底怎么回事，罵了誰?

Vladimir: The Saviour.

弗拉季米爾:救世主。

Estragon: Why?

愛斯特拉岡:為什么，

Vladimir: Because he wouldn't save them.

弗拉季米爾:因?yàn)樗痪人麄儭?/p>

Estragon: From hell?

愛斯特拉岡:從地獄，

Vladimir: Imbecile! From death

弗拉季米爾:笨蛋!是死亡。

Estragon: I thought you said hell.

愛斯特拉岡:我還以為你說的是地獄呢。

Vladimir: From death，from death.

弗拉季米爾:是死亡，死亡。

Estragon: Well what of it?

愛斯特拉岡:那會(huì)怎樣呢?

Vladimir: Then the two of them must have been damned.

弗拉季米爾:他們兩個(gè)一定得下地獄了。

Estragon: And why not?

愛斯特拉岡:誰說不是呢!

Vladimir: But one of the four says that one of the two was saved.

弗拉季米爾:可四個(gè)中有一個(gè)說兩個(gè)小偷中有一個(gè)得救了。

Estragon:Well? They don't agree.

愛斯特拉岡:啊，他們不同意。

Vladimir: But all four were there. And only one speaks of a thief being saved. Why believe him rather than the others?

弗拉季米爾:在場的有四個(gè)。只有一個(gè)說有一個(gè)小偷得救了。為什么要相信，而不相信另外三個(gè)呢?

Estragon: Who believes 'him?

愛斯特拉岡:誰相信了他了?

Vladimir: Everybody. It's the only version they know.

弗拉季米爾:人人都相信。他們知道的就是這樣。

Estragon: People are bloody ignorant apes.

愛斯特拉岡:人只不過是無知的猴子。

Vladimir: Pah!

弗拉季米爾:呸!

Estragon: Charming spot. (He turns, advances to front, halts facing auditorium.) Inspiring prospects. (He turns to Vladimir.) Let's go.

愛斯特拉岡:迷人的場子!(他轉(zhuǎn)身，向前方走，面對觀眾停下)前途無啊!(他轉(zhuǎn)向弗拉季米爾)我們走吧。

Vladimir: We can't.

弗拉季米爾:不行。

Estragon: Why not?

愛斯特拉岡:為什么?

Vladimir: We're waiting for Godot.

弗拉季米爾:我們在等戈多。

Estragon: (despairingly) Ah! (pause) You're sure it was here?

愛斯特拉岡:(絕望地)唉!(停頓)你確定是在這里嗎?

Vladimir: What?

弗拉季米爾:呢?

Estragon: That we were to wait.

愛斯特拉岡:我們等他的地方。

Vladimir: He said by the tree. (They look at the tree.) Do you see any others?

Estragon: What is it?

Vladimir: A shrub.

Vladimir: A? What are you insinuating? That we've come to the wrong place?

Estragon: He should be here.

Vladimir: He didn't sav for sure he'd come.

Vladimir: The point is?

Vladimir: Why... (angrily) Nothing is certain when you're about

Estragon: In my opinion we were here.

Vladimir: (looking round) You recognize the place?

Estragon:I didn't say that.

Vladimir: Well?

Estragon: That makes no difference.

Vladimir:All the same…that tree…(turning towards auditorium) that bog…

Estragon: You're sure it was this evening?

Vladimir: What?

弗拉季米爾:什么，

Estragon:That we were to wait

Vladimir: He said Saturday, (pause) I think.

Estragon: You think

愛斯特拉岡:你認(rèn)為。

Vladimir: I must have made a note of it. (He fumbles in his pockets，bursting with miscellaneous rubbish.)

弗拉季米爾:我一定記下來了。(他在口袋里摸，里面被各色垃圾撐得滿滿的)

Estragon:(very insidious) But what Saturday? And is it Saturday? Is it not rather Sunday? (pause) Or Monday? (pause) Or Friday?

愛斯特拉岡:(陰險(xiǎn)地)但是哪個(gè)星期六呢?是星期六嗎，不是星期天嗎，(停頓)或者星期一，(停頓)或者星期五，

Vladimir: (looking wildly about him，as though the date was inscribed in the landscape) It's not possible!

弗拉季米爾:(狂亂地環(huán)顧四面，好像日期就刻在周圍)那不可能。

Estragon: Or Thursday?

愛斯特拉岡:或者是星期四，

Vladimir: What'll we do?

弗拉季米爾:我們要做什么，

Estragon: If he came yesterday and we weren't here you may be sure he won't come again today.

愛斯特拉岡:如果他昨天來了而我們不在，那就肯定他今天不會(huì)來了。

Vladimir: But you say we were here yesterday.

弗拉季米爾:你說昨天我們在啊。

Estragon: I may be mistaken. Let's stop talking for a minute, do you mind?

愛斯特拉岡:也許我弄錯(cuò)了。我們歇會(huì)兒再說，你不介意吧，

Vladimir: (feebly) All right.

弗拉季米爾:(虛弱無力)好的。

(Estragon sits down on the mound. Vladimir paces agitatedly to and fro, halting from time to time to gaze into distance off. Estragon falls asleep. Vladimir halts finally before Estragon.) Gogo!…Gogo!，..GOGO! (Estragon wakes with a start.)

(愛斯特拉岡坐在土墩上，弗拉季米爾則焦慮不安地來回踱步，時(shí)不時(shí)停下來凝視遠(yuǎn)方。愛斯特拉岡睡著了，弗拉季米爾最后停在他面前)戈戈}……戈戈!··…戈戈，(愛斯特拉岡從睡夢中驚醒)

Estragon: (restored to the horror of his situation). I was asleep! (Despairingly.) Why will you never let me sleep?

愛斯特拉岡:(回想起剛剛的驚恐)我剛才睡著了啊。(失魂落魄地)你怎么總不讓我睡覺，

Vladimir: I felt lonely.

弗拉季米爾:我一個(gè)人孤單。

Estragon: I had a dream.

愛斯特拉岡:我做了個(gè)夢。

Vladimir: Don't tell me!

弗拉季米爾:別告訴我!

Estragon: I dreamt that...

愛斯特拉岡:我夢到一

Vladimir: Don't tell me!

弗拉季米爾:別告訴我!

Estragon: (gesture toward the universe)This one is enough for you? (silence) It's not nice of you, Didi. Who am I to tell my private nightmares to if I can't fell them to you?

愛斯特拉岡:(手指向天空)這個(gè)夠你吼了吧!(沉默)你太不夠意思了，狄狄。像噩夢這樣私密的事我不告訴你那告訴誰呀?

Vladimir: Let them remain private. You know I can't bear that.

弗拉季米爾:還是讓它們保持私密吧。你知道我受不了那個(gè)。

Estragon: (coldly) There are times when I wonder if it wouldn't be better for us to part.

愛斯特拉岡:(冷冷地)有時(shí)候我想我們還是分開好一點(diǎn)。

Vladimir: You wouldn't go far.

弗拉季米爾:你走不遠(yuǎn)的。

Estragon:That would be too bad，really too bad. (pause) Wouldn't it, Didi，be really too bad?
