My friend was an enthusiastic musician, being himself not only a very capable performer but a composer of no ordinary merit.
我的朋友是個熱情奔放的音樂家，他本人不但是個技藝精湛的演奏家，而且還是一個才藝超群的作曲家。
All the afternoon he sat in the stalls wrapped in the most perfect happiness,
整個下午他坐在觀眾席里，顯得十分喜悅，
gently waving his long, thin fingers in time to the music,
他隨著音樂的節(jié)拍輕輕地揮動他瘦長的手指；
while his gently smiling face and his languid, dreamy eyes were as unlike those of Holmes,
他面帶微笑，而眼睛卻略帶傷感，如入夢鄉(xiāng)。這時的福爾摩斯與那厲害的偵探，
the sleuth-hound, Holmes the relentless, keen-witted, ready-handed criminal agent, as it was possible to conceive.
那個鐵面無私、多謀善斷、果敢敏捷的刑事案件偵探福爾摩斯大不相同，幾乎判若兩人。
In his singular character the dual nature alternately asserted itself, and his extreme exactness and astuteness represented,
在他那古怪的雙重性格交替地顯露出來時，正如我常常想的那樣，
as I have often thought, the reaction against the poetic and contemplative mood which occasionally predominated in him.

The swing of his nature took him from extreme languor to devouring energy;

Then it was that the lust of the chase would suddenly come upon him,

and that his brilliant reasoning power would rise to the level of intuition,

until those who were unacquainted with his methods would look askance at him as on a man whose knowledge was not that of other mortals.

When I saw him that afternoon so enwrapped in the music at St.James's Hall
那天下午，我看著他在圣詹姆士會堂完全沉醉在音樂聲中的時候，
I felt that an evil time might be coming upon those whom he had set himself to hunt down.
我覺得他決意要追捕的人該倒霉了。
