eat one's words字面意思是“把文字吃下去”，很多人自然就會(huì)將其理解成“食言”，當(dāng)然其也有這個(gè)意思，需要注意的是這里的“word”必須是復(fù)數(shù)形式。但其還有“收回說(shuō)過(guò)的話，承認(rèn)前言有失，說(shuō)錯(cuò)了，食言”的意思。
【例句】
Tom said he'd help us move, but hebroke his word and failed to show.
湯姆說(shuō)他會(huì)幫我們搬家，但他食言了，他根本沒(méi)露面。
What he said proved wrong, so he had toeat his words.
事實(shí)證明他說(shuō)錯(cuò)了，所以他只好收回前言。
