　　(四)英語中有許多詞一詞多義，其所表示的各個意義，分別與漢語中幾個不同的詞或詞組對應(yīng)。多義詞的具體意義，只有聯(lián)系上下文才能確定。如果脫離上下文，孤立地譯一個詞就很難確切地表達該詞的真正含義。如soft這個詞，除在一般情況下它與漢語的“軟的”、“柔的”對應(yīng)外，還具有許多其他詞義。如：

　　1)(導(dǎo)彈設(shè)施等)無堅固掩護工事的;可攻破的：

　　A soft abovegound launching site

　　無堅固掩體的地面發(fā)射基地

　　The record has been considered soft ever since it was set last May.

　　自從五月份創(chuàng)造了這個紀錄以來，人們一直認為它是很容易被打破的。

　　2)(宇宙飛船的著陸)飛行速度在32公里/小時左右的;軟著陸：

　　The landing must be super-soft, made at a velocity of 18 miles or so an hour.

　　這次著陸一定是超級的軟著陸，即著陸時的飛行速度在每小時18英里(約29公里)左右。

　　3)(麻醉毒品)毒性較輕的;軟性的：

　　Marijuana is usually regarded as a soft drug.

　　大麻通常被看做是軟性(毒性較輕的)麻醉毒品。

　　4)(情報等)非百分之百可靠的：

　　At this stage there is only soft intelligence about the enemy intention. We should not shoot him from the hip.

　　在目前，關(guān)于敵人的意圖還只有不太充分的情報，我們不能魯莽行事。
