So that there are instances among them of men,who, named with Scripture names,a singularlycommon fashion on the island,and in childhoodnaturally imbibing the stately dramatic thee andthou of the Quaker idiom; still, from the audacious,daring, and boundless adventure of theirsubsequent lives, strangely blend with theseunoutgrown peculiarities, a thousand bold dashes ofcharacter, not unworthy a Scandinavian sea-king, ora poetical Pagan Roman.

島上的人們還有個(gè)習(xí)慣，那就是用《圣經(jīng)》中的人物為自己起名字。他們的稱呼中，有“你”與“您”的區(qū)別，顯得有禮有節(jié);然而他們的血液之中卻始終流淌著冒險(xiǎn)的成分，勇猛與大無畏的精神,使他們可以成為斯堪的那維亞的海中之霸，也可以成為頗有詩人氣質(zhì)的羅馬教徒。
