hedge one's bets 直譯過來(lái)就是：“用樹籬笆圍住某人的賭注”，在口語(yǔ)中表示努力使自己做到萬(wàn)無(wú)一失，避免可能的損失(尤指不只把錢投在一種生意上)，所以這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)的正確意思也就是：“躲避風(fēng)險(xiǎn)，留條后路”。因此，當(dāng)美國(guó)人說"You'd better hedge your bets."時(shí)，他/她要表達(dá)的意思就是:"You should leave yourself a route to retreat."、"Leave yourself a way out."。

Jane: I've made up my mind and I'm gonna submit my resignation after work today.
