button one's lip 字面意思是：“用紐扣扣上嘴唇”，這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)的真正意思當(dāng)然不是如此，像多數(shù)習(xí)語(yǔ)一樣，這是個(gè)比喻的說(shuō)法，扣上嘴巴后嘴巴就不能張了，也就表示：“閉嘴，住口，保持沉默”。因此，當(dāng)美國(guó)人說(shuō)"You'd better button your lip."時(shí)，他/她要表達(dá)的意思就是:"You'd better shut up."、"It's wise for you to keep silent on this topic."。
