up the creek字面意思是：“沿著小溪往上走”，早些時候美國人喜歡旅行時沿著河道漫步，由于不容易分清楚主流和支流，就常常會走到支流盡頭的沼澤地，發(fā)現(xiàn)時為時已晚。所以這個習語的正確意思就是：“陷入困境，遭遇困難”。因此，當美國人說"We will be up the creek."時，他/她要表達的意思就是:"We will get into trouble."、"We will get into hot water."、"Things may become unfavorable to us."。
