beat one's gums是從五十多年前第二次世界大戰(zhàn)期間開始流傳的俚語，字面意思是：“碰撞敲擊牙床”，想象一下某人的講話只是單純的牙床碰擊動作，那該是多么的無聊。所以這個俚語的正確意思是：“講話空洞無物，廢話連篇，嘮嘮叨叨”。因此，當美國人說"You're just beating your gums."時，他/她要表達的意思就是:"You're talking a lot of rubbish."、"Stop chattering."。
