My friend, Herbert, has always been fat, but thingsgot so bad recently that he decided to go on a diet.He began his diet a week ago. First of all, he wroteout a long list of all the foods which were forbidden.The list included most of the things Herbertloves: butter, potatoes, rice, beer, milk,chocolate, and sweets. Yesterday I paid him avisit. I rang the bell and was not surprised tosee that Herbert was still as fat as ever. He ledme into his room and hurriedly hid a large parcelunder his desk. It was obvious that he was very embarrassed. When I asked him what he wasdoing, he smiled guiltily and then put the parcel on the desk. He explained that his diet was sostrict that he had to reward himself occasionally. Then he showed me the contents of theparcel. It contained five large bars of chocolate and three bags of sweets!

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1Hugh love是things的定語(yǔ)從句，該定語(yǔ)從句省略了關(guān)系代詞that/which 語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)2 冒號(hào)后的所有內(nèi)容都是對(duì)休喜歡吃的東西作補(bǔ)充說(shuō)明。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 表示“拜訪某人”的表達(dá)有：

1) visit sb. 2) call on sb. 3) look sb. up 4) pay sb. a visit

6、I rang the bell and was not surprised to see that Hugh was still as fat as ever.

我按響了門鈴，當(dāng)看到休仍和往常一樣胖時(shí)，我并不感到驚奇^.

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 ring the door bell按響門鈴

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)2 as... as ever表示“依舊……”,原句實(shí)際上是個(gè)省略句式，補(bǔ)充完整應(yīng)該是：...that Hugh was stillas fat as he ever was.
