Lesson25 Do the English speak English?

課文內(nèi)容：

I arrived in London at last. The railway station wasbig, black and dark. I did not know the way to myhotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke Englishvery carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter,however, could not understand me. I repeated myquestion several times and at last he understood. Heanswered me, but he spoke neither slowly norclearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said. Then he spokeslowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! Theporter and I looked at each otherand smiled. Then he said something and I understood it.'You'll soon learn English!' he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a differentlanguage. The English understand each other, but I don't understand them! Do they speakEnglish?

7. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly.

他回答了我，但他說(shuō)得既不慢也不清楚。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 問(wèn)、說(shuō)、回答等動(dòng)詞的用法：

answer sb. sth. 回答某人……

What shall I answer?

我將怎么回答呢?

ask sb. 問(wèn)某人

I asked her the time but she gave no answer.

我問(wèn)她時(shí)間，可是她沒(méi)回答。

tell sb.告訴某人

Tell him from me that he must be at the meeting on time.

請(qǐng)轉(zhuǎn)告他，叫他務(wù)必按時(shí)到會(huì)。

say to sb.對(duì)某人說(shuō)

We shall see his boat and then we shall say goodbye to him.

我們將參觀他的船，然后與他告別。

reply to sb / sth.對(duì)……作出答復(fù)、反應(yīng)

A lot of people replied to our advertisement.

有許多人對(duì)我們的廣告作出了反應(yīng)。

6 ) respond to sb. / sth.對(duì)……作出反應(yīng)

She responded to my letter with a phone call.

她收到我的信，給我回了個(gè)電話。

著重對(duì)比：answer，reply, respond均含有“回答”的意思。

1) answer是常用詞，可指口頭、筆頭，甚至可表示以行動(dòng)回答;

2) reply 較 answer正式;

3) respond是正式用語(yǔ)，指對(duì)號(hào)召、職責(zé)、請(qǐng)求等作出自發(fā)的適當(dāng)反應(yīng)。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)2 neither... nor...意為“既不……也不……”此結(jié)構(gòu)不僅可以連接副詞還可連接其他詞：

I can neither sing nor dance.

我既不會(huì)唱歌也不會(huì)跳舞。

She speaks neither Chinese nor English.

她既不會(huì)說(shuō)中文也不會(huì)說(shuō)英語(yǔ)。

My brother is standing beside the door neither in nor out.

我弟弟站在門口，既不進(jìn)來(lái)也不出去。

8. ‘I am a foreigner, ’I said.

“我是外國(guó)人，”我說(shuō)。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 在國(guó)外如果聽(tīng)不懂對(duì)方的話可要求他講慢一點(diǎn)，并說(shuō)“I’m a foreigner.”。在國(guó)內(nèi)如果聽(tīng)不懂方言則不妨說(shuō)“I’m a stranger here.(我不是本地人)”。

9. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him.

于是他說(shuō)話的語(yǔ)速放慢了些，但我還是聽(tīng)不懂。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 對(duì)比學(xué)習(xí)：understand, comprehend, know都有“知道，明白，“理解”的意思。

understand 是常用詞，強(qiáng)調(diào)完全了解

People who speak the same language can easily understand one another.

說(shuō)同一種語(yǔ)言的人能夠很容易彼此了解。

comprehend 側(cè)重了解的過(guò)程

He comprehends mathematics.

他數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)得好。

know 強(qiáng)調(diào)了解其中一部分的含義

She knows more about America than anyone else I know.

她比我認(rèn)識(shí)的其他任何人對(duì)美國(guó)的了解都多。
