The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth wouldsee me. I felt very nervous when I went into hisoffice. He did not look up from his desk when Ientered. After I had sat down, he said thatbusiness was very bad. He told me that the firmcould not afford to pay such large salaries.Twenty people had already left. I knew that myturn had come. ‘Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weakvoice. ‘Don't interrupt,' he Said. Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra&100 a year!

4.After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.

語言點1 此句中after引導時間狀語從句。had sat down是過去的過去發(fā)生的動作，用過去完成時。

語言點2 主句he said that..，變成直接引語為：he said,“Business is very bad.”

他告訴我說，公司現(xiàn)在無力支付這么巨額的工資。

語言點1 此句中包含典型的間接引語，that引導的間接引語為賓語從句。'

語言點2 pay such large salaries = pay such high salaries 支付如此巨額的工資

有20個人已經(jīng)被迫離開了公司。

語言點 already意為“已經(jīng)”，該詞經(jīng)常與完成時態(tài)連用，強調(diào)結果：Have you finished your composition already?你已經(jīng)完成作文了嗎?
