The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth wouldsee me. I felt very nervous when I went into hisoffice. He did not look up from his desk when Ientered. After I had sat down, he said that businesswas very bad. He told me that the firm could notafford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people hadalready left. I knew that my turn had come. ‘Mr.Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice. ‘Don'tinterrupt,' he said. Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra &100 ayear!

7.I knew that my turn had come.
我這時明白下一個該輪到我了。
語言點 turn在此為名詞。對比：
1)(口語)Ifs my turn. = I am the next one.該輪到我了。
2)(書面)My turn has come.= My chance / opportunity has come.該輪到我了。
8.‘Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice.
“哈姆斯沃斯先生，”我無力地說道。
語言點 in a weak voice用微弱的聲音(由于心虛或虛弱);in a whisper小聲說話，耳語;in a strcmgvoice用有力的聲音;loud voice高聲;low voice低聲
9.‘Don't interrupt,' he said.
“別打斷我的話，”他說。
語言點 Don’t...結(jié)構(gòu)為祈使句，經(jīng)常表示一種命令：Don’t look at me.別看著我! Don’t cry.不準哭!Don’t say no.別說不!
10.Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra &100 a year!
然后他微笑了一下告訴我，我將得到一年1000千英鎊的額外收入。
語言點1 receive表示客觀上收到，在此并不是馬上給錢，只是個口頭承諾。
語言點2 would為will的過去式，過去說要在將來加錢，因此用過去將來時。
語言點3 extra意為“額外的”，作定語，修飾pounds，表示額外的錢。
比較學習：extra，more, others, another
1)數(shù)量+ extra / more + 名詞：two extra / more pens
