暮光之城?暮色 第33期:第三章 現(xiàn)象(3)
死一般的寂靜了一會(huì)兒之后，突然又響起了尖叫聲。在這突如其來的喧鬧聲中，我聽見不止一人在叫我的名字，但有一個(gè)聲音比所有的尖叫聲都要清晰，我聽見愛德華·卡倫在耳邊著急到幾乎瘋狂的啞著嗓子問道。
"Bella? Are you all right?"
"貝拉?你沒事吧?"
"I'm fine." My voice sounded strange. I tried to sit up, and realized he was holding me against the side of his body in an iron grasp.
"我沒事。"我的聲音聽起來怪怪的。我試圖坐起來，這才意識(shí)到了他死死地將我摟在他身子的一側(cè)。
"Be careful," he warned as I struggled. "I think you hit your head pretty hard."
"小心，"我掙扎著坐起來時(shí)，他提醒我，"我覺得你的頭撞得很重。"
I became aware of a throbbing ache centered above my left ear.
我開始覺得左耳上方有個(gè)地方，疼得跟抽筋似的。
"Ow," I said, surprised.
"哎喲，"我又驚又疼地叫道。
"That's what I thought." His voice, amazingly, sounded like he was suppressing laughter.
"這正是我所想到的。"他的聲音，很令人驚異，聽上去好像他在強(qiáng)忍住笑似的。
"How in the…" I trailed off, trying to clear my head, get my bearings. "How did you get over here so fast?"
"你怎么能在……"我說到一半，試圖理一理思路，清醒一下頭腦，"你過來得怎么這么快?"
"I was standing right next to you, Bella," he said, his tone serious again.
"我就站在你的旁邊呀，貝拉，"他說，語氣又嚴(yán)肅起來了。
I turned to sit up, and this time he let me, releasing his hold around my waist and sliding as far from me as he could in the limited space. I looked at his concerned, innocentexpression and was disoriented again by the force of his gold-colored eyes.What was I asking him?
我準(zhǔn)備坐起來，這一次他任由了我，松開了我的腰，而且挪開了，挪到了這有限的空間所能允許的最遠(yuǎn)的地方。我瞅了一眼他那關(guān)切而又無辜的表情，又被他那雙金色眼睛的力量弄得六神無主，不知所措了。我剛才在問他什么來著?
And then they found us, a crowd of people with tears streaming down their faces, shouting at each other, shouting at us.
然后他們找到了我們，一群淚流滿面的人，彼此大喊大叫，沖我們大喊大叫。
"Don't move," someone instructed.
"別動(dòng)，"有人命令道。
"Get Tyler out of the van!" someone else shouted.
"把泰勒從車上弄出來!"另一個(gè)人喊道。
There was a flurry of activity around us. I tried to get up, but Edward's cold hand pushed my shoulder down.
我們周圍一片慌亂。我試圖站起來，可愛德華冰冷的手把我的肩膀按下了。
"Just stay put for now."
"請(qǐng)你暫時(shí)呆著別動(dòng)。"
"But it's cold," I complained. It surprised me when he chuckled under his breath. There was an edge to the sound.
"可是很冷，"我抱怨說。他壓著嗓子暗笑，令我感到十分吃驚。他的聲音尖得跟刀子似的。
"You were over there," I suddenly remembered, and his chuckle stopped short. "You were by your car."
"你剛才在那邊，"我突然記起來了，他的笑聲嘎然而止了，"在你的車邊上。"
His expression turned hard. "No, I wasn't."
他的表情一下子沉了下來："不，我不在。"
"I saw you." All around us was chaos. I could hear the gruffer voices of adults arriving on the scene. But I obstinately held on to our argument; I was right, and he was going to admit it.
"我看見你在。"我們周圍一片嘈雜。我聽見現(xiàn)場(chǎng)有了大人們粗啞的嗓門兒?？晌疫€是固執(zhí)地抓著我們的爭(zhēng)論不放;我是對(duì)的，他眼看快要承認(rèn)了。
"Bella, I was standing with you, and I pulled you out of the way." He unleashed the full,devastating power of his eyes on me, as if trying to communicate something crucial.
"貝拉，我剛才是跟你站在一起，而且還把你拉開了。"他把那雙眼睛的全部魅力都釋放在我的身上了，好像試圖跟我說某件至關(guān)重要的事情似的。
"No." I set my jaw.
"不。"我撅起了嘴。
The gold in his eyes blazed. "Please, Bella."
他金色的眼睛閃閃發(fā)亮："求你了，貝拉。"
"Why?" I demanded.
"為什么?"我問。
"Trust me," he pleaded, his soft voice overwhelming.
"相信我，"他央求道，聲音溫柔得無以名狀。
I could hear the sirens now. "Will you promise to explain everything to me later?"
這時(shí)我聽見了救護(hù)車的警報(bào)聲："那你能保證以后把這一切給我解釋清楚嗎?"
"Fine," he snapped, abruptly exasperated.
"行，"他厲聲說道，突然怒不可遏了。
"Fine," I repeated angrily.
"行，"我憤怒地重復(fù)道。
It took six EMTs and two teachers — Mr. Varner and Coach Clapp — to shift the van far enough away from us to bring the stretchers in. Edward vehemently refused his, and I tried to do the same, but the traitor told them I'd hit my head and probably had a concussion. I almost died of humiliation when they put on the neck brace. It looked like the entire school was there,watching soberly as they loaded me in the back of the ambulance. Edward got to ride in the front. It was maddening.
六個(gè)緊急醫(yī)療救護(hù)員和兩名老師——瓦納先生和克拉普教練——才把客貨兩用車從我們身邊移開，移到了勉強(qiáng)能放進(jìn)擔(dān)架床那么遠(yuǎn)的地方。愛德華強(qiáng)烈拒絕坐擔(dān)架床，我也試圖拒絕，可那個(gè)叛徒出賣了我，跟他們說我撞了頭，很可能撞成了腦震蕩。他們給我上頸托兒時(shí)，我差點(diǎn)兒羞死了。好像全校的人都來了，肅穆地看著他們把我推上了救護(hù)車。愛德華坐到了前面。真是叫人受不了。
To make matters worse, Chief Swan arrived before they could get me safely away.
更為糟糕的是，斯旺警長在他們還沒有把我安全地弄走之前趕到了。
"Bella!" he yelled in panic when he recognized me on the stretcher.
"貝拉!"他認(rèn)出了擔(dān)架床上的我，驚慌失措地尖叫道。
"I'm completely fine, Char — Dad," I sighed. "There's nothing wrong with me."
"我很好，查——爸，"我嘆息道，"我一點(diǎn)事兒都沒有。"
He turned to the closest EMT for a second opinion. I tuned him out to consider the jumbleof inexplicable images churning chaotically in my head. When they'd lifted me away from the car, I had seen the deep dent in the tan car's bumper — a very distinct dent that fit the contours of Edward's shoulders… as if he had braced himself against the car with enough force to damage the metal frame…
他明顯沒有相信我的感覺，轉(zhuǎn)向離他最近的一個(gè)緊急醫(yī)療救護(hù)員問了第二個(gè)人對(duì)我受傷程度的判斷。我把他放到了一邊，去想那一堆雜亂無章地浮現(xiàn)在我腦子里的無法解釋的畫面。他們把我從車邊上抬走的時(shí)候，我看見那輛棕紅色小汽車的保險(xiǎn)杠上有一道深深的印痕——一道非常獨(dú)特的印痕，與愛德華肩膀的輪廓正好吻合……好像是他用了很大的力，撐靠在車上把那個(gè)金屬玩意兒給弄凹了。……
And then there was his family, looking on from the distance, with expressions that ranged from disapproval to fury but held no hint of concern for their brother's safety.
接下來就是他的家人，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地站在一邊，表情各異，從反對(duì)到盛怒，但就是絲毫不見對(duì)他們這位兄弟安全的擔(dān)心。
I tried to think of a logical solution that could explain what I had just seen — a solution that excluded the assumption that I was insane.
我試圖想出一個(gè)合乎邏輯的答案，來解釋我剛剛見到的這一切——來排除認(rèn)為我神經(jīng)不正常的臆斷。
Naturally, the ambulance got a police escort to the county hospital. I felt ridiculous the whole time they were unloading me. What made it worse was that Edward simply glided through the hospital doors under his own power. I ground my teeth together.
自然，救護(hù)車由一名警察護(hù)送到了縣醫(yī)院。他們把我從救護(hù)車上抬下來的整個(gè)這段時(shí)間，我都感到很可笑。更可氣的是，愛德華卻可以輕而易舉地溜出病房，自由活動(dòng)。我咬緊了牙齒。
They put me in the emergency room, a long room with a line of beds separated by pastel-patterned curtains. A nurse put a pressure cuff on my arm and a thermometer under my tongue. Since no one bothered pulling the curtain around to give me some privacy, I decided I wasn't obligated to wear the stupid-looking neck brace anymore. When the nurse walked away, I quickly unfastened the Velcro and threw it under the bed.
他們把我放在急救室。急救室是一間狹長的屋子，里面擺放著一溜病床，床與床之間由一些蠟筆畫圖案的簾子隔開。一名護(hù)士在我胳膊上綁了一個(gè)血壓袖帶，在我舌頭下面放了一個(gè)體溫表。既然誰都懶得拉上簾子給我一點(diǎn)兒自己的空間，我想我也就沒有義務(wù)戴那個(gè)傻乎乎的頸托兒了。護(hù)士走開后，我三下五除二，扯開了維可牢搭扣 ，把它扔到了床底下。
