一到自助餐廳,3號(hào)樓一眼就可以看到了。東邊的角上有一個(gè)白色的方塊,方塊上用黑漆寫著偌大的一個(gè)"3"字。快到門口時(shí),我覺得自己的呼吸漸漸有點(diǎn)急促了。我跟在兩個(gè)穿著男女皆宜的雨披的學(xué)生后面走進(jìn)教室時(shí)),我盡力屏住了呼吸。
The classroom was small. The people in front of me stopped just inside the door to hang up their coats on a long row of hooks. I copied them. They were two girls, one a porcelain-colored blonde, the other also pale, with light brown hair. At least my skin wouldn't be a standout here.
教室不大。我前面的那兩個(gè)人一跨過(guò)門就停了下來(lái),把雨衣掛在了一長(zhǎng)排鉤子上。我也跟著她們那樣做了。那是兩個(gè)女孩子,一個(gè)是棕紅皮膚、金發(fā)碧眼,另一個(gè)皮膚也很蒼白,一頭閃亮的褐發(fā)。起碼,我的皮膚不會(huì)很顯眼了。
I took the slip up to the teacher, a tall, balding man whose desk had a nameplate identifying him as Mr. Mason. He gawked at me when he saw my name — not an encouraging response— and of course I flushed tomato red. But at least he sent me to an empty desk at the back without introducing me to the class. It was harder for my new classmates to stare at me in the back, but somehow, they managed. I kept my eyes down on the reading list the teacher had given me. It was fairly basic: Bronte, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Faulkner. I'd already read everything. That was comforting… and boring. I wondered if my mom would send me myfolder of old essays, or if she would think that was cheating. I went through different arguments with her in my head while the teacher droned on.
我把紙片拿上去交給了老師,一個(gè)高個(gè)子、禿頂?shù)哪欣蠋?,他在講臺(tái)上放了一張名牌,寫明自己是梅森先生??吹轿业拿趾螅舸舻乜粗?mdash;—不是什么鼓勵(lì)的反應(yīng)——我自然刷地一下子紅了臉,紅得跟番茄似的。不過(guò)至少,他沒有把我介紹給全班同學(xué),直接把我打發(fā)到后面的一張空著的課桌上去了。坐在后面,增大了我的這班新同學(xué)盯著我看的難度, 但是無(wú)論如何他們還是做到了。我一直低著頭,看著老師發(fā)給我的閱讀書目清單,都是相當(dāng)基礎(chǔ)的:勃朗特、莎士比亞、喬叟、??思{。我全都讀過(guò)了。這很令我欣慰……同時(shí)又讓我覺得厭煩無(wú)聊。我不知道我媽媽會(huì)不會(huì)把我原來(lái)寫的那一夾子論文給我寄過(guò)來(lái),或者說(shuō)不知道她會(huì)不會(huì)認(rèn)為那是作弊。老師嗡嗡嗡地講他的課時(shí),我在腦子里跟我媽媽進(jìn)行了各種各樣的爭(zhēng)論。
