4月19日，在清華大學建校110周年校慶日即將來臨之際，中共中央總書記、國家主席、中央軍委主席習近平來到清華大學考察。習近平在考察時強調，要堅持中國特色世界一流大學建設目標方向，我國高等教育要為服務國家富強、民族復興、人民幸福貢獻力量。
President Xi Jinping stressed adhering to the direction of building world-class universities with Chinese characteristics as he visited Tsinghua University on April 19 ahead of its 110th anniversary. Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said China's higher education should make contributions to the prosperity of the country, the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the well-being of the people.

高水平大學是一個國家綜合國力和科學文化水平的重要標志，是國家核心競爭力的有力支撐，在引領經(jīng)濟社會發(fā)展中發(fā)揮著巨大作用。從上世紀90年代至今，我國高水平大學建設之路行穩(wěn)致遠，培養(yǎng)了大批高素質專業(yè)人才。如今，我國高等教育在學總規(guī)模已經(jīng)穩(wěn)居世界第一，2020年高等教育毛入學率達54.4%，成為名副其實的高等教育大國。
2015年8月18日，中央全面深化改革領導小組第十五次會議審議通過《統(tǒng)籌推進世界一流大學和一流學科建設總體方案》，推動實現(xiàn)我國從高等教育大國到高等教育強國的歷史性跨越。根據(jù)《總體方案》，到2030年，更多的大學和學科進入世界一流行列，若干所大學進入世界一流大學前列，一批學科進入世界一流學科前列；到本世紀中葉，一流大學和一流學科的數(shù)量和實力進入世界前列，基本建成高等教育強國。
