One of the most influential and notorious advisers of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is in detention in Tripoli nearly a year after he first went on the run . The former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi was handed over by the authorities in Mauritania where he was arrested in March when he arrived on a false passport. Rana Jawad reports from Tripoli.

One of the most fears personalities of Libya's previous government is now in Libyan custody. The attorney general spokesman Tauha Ballah told the BBC that Mr. al-Senussi has undergone a routine medical check up and he is in good health. He added that the prosecution would begin questioning him as soon as possible. For decades, Abdullah al-Senussi, Libya's former spy chief was Col. Gaddafi's right hand man . He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes during last year's uprising.

Shares in the mobile phone maker Nokia have tumbled even as the company unveiled its new smart phone in New York. The new device is a result of a partnership with Microsoft. Theo Leggett reports.

The launch of the new lamia smart phone had been built the make-or-break moment for Nokia. The Finnish manufacturer once dominated the global mobile phone market, however, in recent years; shares have been declining rapidly largely due to the success of Apple's iPhone and products using Google's Android operating system. Investors had hoped that the high profile partnership with Microsoft would allow Nokia to recover lost ground. However, initial reactions to the new phone which uses Microsoft's Windows 8 software suggest it is not the gain change which experts say the company badly needs.

The American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrives in East Timor shortly her seven air stopover as part of a six-nation tour of the region in an effort to boost US ties with the Asia. From Jakarta, here is Karishma Vaswani.

Mrs. Clinton is the first US Secretary of State to visit East Timor. The visit includes the meeting with the newly elected Timorese President Taur Matan Ruak and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. Mrs. Clinton’s trip is an attempt to highlight the role the US has played in Timor since it gained independence ten years ago. But analysts say this visit is about the US trying to remain relevant in East Timor which has seen a surge in Chinese investment and infrastructure projects in recent years.

The Peruvian President Ollanta Humala said a major figure in the Shining Path Rebel Movement had been killed. Mr. Humala said the rebel known as Comrade Williams had been killed in a clash with the security forces in a remote jungle location. The President said Comrade Williams was a skilled sharpshooter who had taken part in an ambush in which 14 soldiers died in 2009. The government says that it has defeated the Shining Path and their main stronghold but remnants of the Maoist group remain in Peru's coca growing heartland.

Our BBC correspondent at the convention says Mr. Clinton is more popular than ever and a key asset for President Obama in his campaign for reelection.

Scientists have published the most detailed analysis to date of the human genome. Fergus Walsh has more.

More than 400 scientists in five countries including Britain shared this project which explored the entire function of the human genome, the genetic blueprint of life. It's a huge task. There are three billion pairs of genetic code in our genome. Up to now, most of the researcher's attentions have been on just 2% of our DNA called genes. But writing in the Journal Nature, the team say they have found that 80% of our genome has a specific function. They have also discovered a vast rate of DAN switches, 4 million of them, which control genes.

The researchers say the information will provide new avenues for those trying to understand and treat disease.

Astronauts from the International Space Station have successfully installed a new power unite after four and a half hour spacewal k. The unite is one of four which powered the station with energy from solar panels. Last week's attempt to fix the unite was swanked by a jammed bolt. But astronauts have now solved the problem by cleaning the bolt with home-made brushes including one adapted from a tooth brush.
