The actor Richard Lewis has died at the age of 76. The comedian died of a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday (Feb 27), with Hollywood legend Bette Midler leading an online tribute. His publicist Jeff Abraham confirmed his tragic death. Lewis had been suffering from Parkinson's disease, a diagnosis he revealed in April 2023. "His wife Joyce Lapinski thanks everyone for their love, friendship and support and asks for privacy at this time," Abraham said.

Lewis burst onto the New York and Los Angeles comedy scene in the 1970s along with comedians such as Andy Kaufman, Richard Belzer and Ilan Bussler, and quickly became a darling of late night shows, including The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. His work includes playing a fictionalized version of himself in the hit comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm. He returned for the show's 12th and final season, which premiered this year. He also appeared in films such as Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Dear Daddy.

In April 2023, Lewis said he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease after a brain scan. At the time, he had been battling the disease for two years. He explained at the time: "Luckily, it was quite late when I got it and they said you progress very slowly, if anything, and I was on the right medication, which was cool," Lewis said. "I just want you to know that's where it used to be. I've done stand-up comedy and I'm just focusing on writing and acting. I have Parkinson's disease, but I'm being cared for by doctors, everything is cool, I love my wife, I love my puppy, I love all my friends and fans."
