今天要學(xué)的習(xí)慣說(shuō)法由三個(gè)單詞合成，中間都用連詞符號(hào)相連。這個(gè)復(fù)合詞是:down-to-earth。earth是“大地”的意思，down-to-earth這個(gè)習(xí)慣說(shuō)法往往用來(lái)說(shuō)某一種人，表現(xiàn)他們什么樣的品質(zhì)呢?

我們看個(gè)例子來(lái)體會(huì)吧。說(shuō)話(huà)的人要描述他公司的同事對(duì)新經(jīng)理的看法：

這位經(jīng)理出生在富裕家庭又上了第一流的學(xué)校。這樣的背景很可能會(huì)造就一個(gè)高高在上的人，但是盡管如此，她卻能體諒下屬的工作，而且熱情友好又平易近人，所以說(shuō)她確實(shí)是個(gè)腳踏實(shí)地的人。

這樣看來(lái)down-to-earth用來(lái)描述腳踏實(shí)地的品質(zhì)，它的意思就是踏實(shí)謙遜。另外有個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)很容易跟down-to-earth相混淆，它是：down to the ground。 down to the ground看來(lái)和down-to-earth相似，實(shí)際上它們表示不同的意思，down to the ground含義是“完全、徹底地”。例如，有人可以這樣說(shuō)自己的房子：My house suits me right down to the ground. 他表示：“我對(duì)我的房子完全心滿(mǎn)意足。” Down to the ground用來(lái)描繪完全徹底的程度。
