古代中國人相信天圓地方之說。在天壇，圓與方的形象被大量運用。天壇內(nèi)外兩道圍墻是上圓下方;圜丘三層平臺皆為圓形，而其外兩層矮墻是內(nèi)圓外方;祈年殿建筑與臺基為圓形，而其外院墻為方形。此種方圓手法，在天壇里許多地方都可見到。

天壇里”九“這個數(shù)字及其倍數(shù)被反復(fù)使用。祈年殿是祈求豐年之地，所用數(shù)字多與農(nóng)業(yè)有關(guān)。如象征一年四季的“四”、一年十二個月的”十二”。二十四節(jié)氣的”二十四“，在天壇里也被反復(fù)使用。
