A: Let's look up Bill Gates, I think he is probably the richest person in the history of the universe.

B: Let's see . . .  Bill Gates. founder of Microsoft, born in 1955.  He's pretty young. Then.  I hope I'm as rich as him when I'm his age.

我們來看看……比爾·蓋茨，1955年生，微軟公司的創(chuàng)始人。他很年輕嘛。希望我到他這個(gè)年紀(jì)時(shí)也能跟他一樣富有，

A: You've got no chance! You're too lazy to become a billionaire. He started studying at Harvard University in 1973, but he dropped out. That sounds more like you!

沒機(jī)會啦！你太懶了，成不了億萬富翁。比爾·蓋茨1973印在哈佛大學(xué)讀書．但后來退學(xué)了。聽起來很像你嘛！

B: It was at Harvard that he met Paul Allen Gates and Allen worked on a version of the programming language BASIC, that was the basis for che MITS Altair, the first microcomputer available.

在哈佛大學(xué)，他遇見了鮑爾·艾倫。他們一起研制BASIC計(jì)算機(jī)程序語言編譯器．這是微型儀器和遙感系統(tǒng)公司牛郎星計(jì)算機(jī)運(yùn)行的基礎(chǔ)，是當(dāng)時(shí)可用的第一臺微型電腦。

A: So, dropping out in his junior year worked out well tor him because that's when he set up Microsoft. Microsoft helped to make the computer easier to use with its developed and purchased software, everyone wanted to use it.

所以，在大三的時(shí)候，退學(xué)對他來說是個(gè)不錯(cuò)的決定，閃為正是那時(shí)他創(chuàng)辦了微軟公司。該公司利用自己扦發(fā)和購買的軟件，使電腦用起來容易多了．每個(gè)人都想用。

B: But Microsoft is a monopoly, I don't think that should be allowed in business and I think many people agree with me. Bill Gates has his critics over the years concerning the way he does business.

但微軟是個(gè)壟斷企業(yè)。我認(rèn)為在這一衍不應(yīng)該搞壟斷，而且我想很多人都和我的看法一致。最近幾年，比爾·蓋茨的經(jīng)營方式肯定遭到了不少批評。

A: It's because he is an aggressive businessman, he gets what he wants using every tactic available.

那是因?yàn)樗瓦捅迫?，利用一切手段得到他想要的東西。

B: Wow! In 2006, his wealth was estimated at $53 billion, I can't even imagine that much money. I wonder what it would look like if it was all in cash.

哇！到2006年，他的財(cái)富估計(jì)達(dá)到 530億美元。那么多錢我連想都不敢想。如果這些錢都是現(xiàn)金，不知道會是什么樣子。

A: What people forget is chat although he is an aggressive businessman, he is also very kind-hearted.  He often donates considerable amounts of money to charity and has even set up his own charitable foundation.

別忘了，比爾·蓋茨除了是個(gè)有進(jìn)取精神的商人之外，還是個(gè)慈善家，他經(jīng)常向慈善事業(yè)大量捐款，還成立了自己的慈善基金會。

B: Yes, he and his wife Melinda. who he has 3 children with, created the foundation in 2000. They donate more than $ l billion each year.

是的，他和妻子梅林達(dá)在2000年創(chuàng)辦了基金會，他們有3個(gè)孩子。他們每年的捐款都超過10億元。

A: In 2005 he received an "honorary" knighthood from the Queen of England, a KBE Order for his services in reducing poverty and improving health in the developing countries of the world.

2005年，因?yàn)樗麨槭澜绨l(fā)展中國家的脫貧和健康事業(yè)所做的努力，英國女王授予他榮譽(yù)爵士勛章。

B: It's the second highest order given out.  He can't be a  " Sir"  though,  because he isn't British. I think be deserved it, he does so much good work.

那是英國的二等高級帝國勛爵士頭銜。不過他不能做爵士，因?yàn)樗皇怯?。但我覺得這個(gè)頭銜對他是當(dāng)之無愧，他做了那么多善事。
