現(xiàn)在大家流行使用智能手機(jī)，頻繁地用手機(jī)發(fā)短信，上網(wǎng)，打游戲，照相?？墒菗?jù)統(tǒng)計，使用手機(jī)打電話聊天的人現(xiàn)在反而越來越少，手機(jī)原有的電話功能漸漸變得不那么重要了。這也讓我想到一個習(xí)慣用語。那就是：fall by the wayside。

Wayside意思是路邊，fall by the wayside整個詞組跟道路其實沒什么關(guān)系。它的意思是終止，不在繼續(xù)下去了。就像上面的例子中，智能手機(jī)用戶越來越依賴于手機(jī)的其他功能，而打電話的功能用得人反而越來越少了。The population of folks talking on a phone appears to fall by the wayside more and more. 下面例子里的這個人從小就想當(dāng)建筑師，他能不能從事自己理想的職業(yè)呢？我們來聽一聽：

例句-1：From the time I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming an architect. But my school counselor informed me that the unemployment rate for that choice is quite high. That explains why interest in architecture has fallen by the wayside. Maybe I should be investing in a more successful career like nursing or teaching.

這段話是說：我從小就夢想做一名建筑師。但是學(xué)校的指導(dǎo)老師告訴我，建筑師行業(yè)的失業(yè)率特別高。這就解釋了為什么現(xiàn)在想當(dāng)建筑師的學(xué)生越來越少。或許我應(yīng)當(dāng)選擇一個更有前途的職業(yè)，比如護(hù)士或者教師。

為現(xiàn)實被迫放棄自己的夢想真是無奈。我的一個鄰居就面臨特別現(xiàn)實的問題。她是一名圖形藝術(shù)家，可是隨著電腦技術(shù)的發(fā)展，普通人只要使用電腦技術(shù)就能繪制各種圖形，她也就很難找到工作了。The need for her products and services fell by the wayside, 她所提供的產(chǎn)品和服務(wù)，對消費者來說已經(jīng)越來越?jīng)]有吸引力了。
