美國人在日常生活中經(jīng)常用 hot 這個字，例如 hot potato， hot dog， hot number， hot rod 等等。它們有的時候代表好的、正面的意思，但有一些則具有反面的意思。今天我們要介紹兩個和 hot 這個字有關(guān)的習慣用語。第一個是：hot seat。

大家都已經(jīng)知道 hot 這個字是熱的意思，seat 就是座位。 Hot seat 這個俗語從字面上來解釋就是那個座位很熱，或很燙。但是，它的真正意思卻并非如此。大家都知道，有些國家在處決那些被判死刑的犯人時不是用槍決的方式，而是讓犯人坐在一張可以通電的椅子上，把他電死的。以前，人們就是把犯人坐的那張椅子叫做 hot seat。可是，美國好些州現(xiàn)在都已經(jīng)廢除了死刑。Hot seat 這個俗語的意思也有所改變。現(xiàn)在，hot seat 這個俗語指的是那種可能會產(chǎn)生麻煩，或讓人感到難堪的局面。請聽下面這個例子：

例句-1: "I thought it would be fun to judge the high school beauty contest. Instead I ended up on the hot seat. When we picked the winner, I made one girl happy and nineteen others mad at me."

這個人說："我原先以為參加中學(xué)生美女評選是一件很有趣的事。可是,結(jié)果弄得我很為難。我們選出了一個冠軍，這樣，只有一個女孩是高興的，另外十九個都生我們的氣。"

我們再舉個例子：

例句-2: "If you're mayor of a big city these days, you're sitting in the hot seat -- it's hard to make voters happy when you don't have the money in the budget to give them all the things they expect."

這句話翻成中文就是："現(xiàn)在這個年頭，你要是當一個大城市的市長的話，那麻煩可多啦。預(yù)算里沒有那么多的錢來滿足選民們所期望的一切，要使他們高興真是難上難。"

下面我們要給大家介紹的一個俗語也是和 hot 這個字有關(guān)的。 這個俗語就是 hot and bothered。 Hot and bothered 的意思是一個人由于某件事而感到很激動、擔憂或者很生氣。一個簡單的例子就是：

例句-3: "Nancy was all hot and bothered when her boyfriend showed up two hours late to take her to the party."

這個人說："南希和她的男朋友約好了一起去參加一個聚會。可是，南希等呀等，她的男朋友晚了兩個小時才來接她。南?？烧媸羌壬鷼?又擔心。"

一個丈夫做完了晚飯，把廚房弄得一塌糊涂。這時，他對他的妻子說：

例句-4: "Please don't get hot and bothered about all these dirty pans and dishes, honey. After dinner you just sit down and relax and watch TV, and let me clean up the kitchen."

這位丈夫說："親愛的，你別因為這些臟的盤子和碗就發(fā)火和擔心。吃完飯，你就去坐下，看看電視，輕松輕松，讓我來把廚房打掃乾凈。"
