譯文:天下人能說“我道”偉大,不像任何具體事物的樣子。正因?yàn)樗鼈ゴ?,所以才不像任何具體的事物。如果它像任何一個(gè)具體的事物,那么“道”也就顯得很渺小了。我有三件法寶執(zhí)守而且保全它:第一件叫做慈愛;第二件叫做儉嗇;第三件是不敢居于天下人的前面。有了這柔慈,所以能勇武;有了儉嗇,所以能大方;不敢居于天下人之先,所以能成為萬物的首長?,F(xiàn)在丟棄了柔慈而追求勇武;丟棄了嗇儉而追求大方;舍棄退讓而求爭先,結(jié)果是走向死亡。慈愛,用來征戰(zhàn),就能夠勝利,用來守衛(wèi)就能鞏固。天要援助誰,就用柔慈來保護(hù)他。
這一章是“道”的自述,講的是“道”的原則在政治、軍事方面的具體運(yùn)用。老子說,“道”的原則有三條(即三寶),這就是:“慈”,即愛心加上同情感;“儉”,即含藏培蓄,不奢侈,不肆為;“不敢為天下先”,是“謙讓”、“不爭”的思想。有“道”的人運(yùn)用這三條原則,能取得非常好的效果,否則,便會(huì)自取滅亡。本章實(shí)際是對《德經(jīng)》三十八章以來的一個(gè)小結(jié)。
《道德經(jīng)》(第六十七章)
天下皆謂我道大,
似不肖。
夫唯大,
故似不肖。
若肖,
久矣其細(xì)也夫!
我有三寶,
持而保之:
一曰慈,
二曰儉,
三曰不敢為天下先。
慈故能勇,
儉故能廣,
不敢為天下先,
故能成器長。
今舍慈且勇,
舍儉且廣,
舍后且先,
死矣。
夫慈,
以戰(zhàn)則勝,
以守則固。
天將救之,
以慈衛(wèi)之。
Chapter 67
All under heaven say that I am great, great but unconventional.
Now,
Precisely because I am unconventional,
I can be great;
If I were conventional,
I would long since have become a trifle.
I have always possessed three treasures that I guard and cherish.
The first is compassion,
The second is frugality,
The third is not daring to be ahead of all under heaven.
Now,
Because I am compassionate, I can be brave;
Because I am frugal, I can be magnanimous;
Because I dare not be ahead of all under heaven, I can be a leader in the completion of affairs.
If, today, I were to
Be courageous while forsaking compassion,
Be magnanimous while forsaking frugality,
Get ahead while forsaking the hindmost,
that would be death!
For compassion
In war brings victory,
In defense brings invulnerability.
Whomsoever heaven would establish,
It surrounds with a bulwark of compassion.
