The actions collectively encompass 32 patents, according to Nokia. According to US court documents, the patents at issue relate to video coding, increasing battery life and remotely locating phones, among other applications.
Nokia said in one of the lawsuits, filed in a federal court in Texas known for its patent litigation, that use of its “patented innovations enable Apple to sell smaller, more efficient, more capable and more appealing products.”
It’s not the first time the two companies have faced off in court over intellectual property disputes, which have run rampant throughout the smartphone business. When Nokia sued Apple in 2009, it touched off counter-suits from the US company and began a wave of patent litigation among the biggest handset makers and computer makers over the booming smartphone market.
Nokia and Apple were also the first to resolve their litigation, reaching a comprehensive deal in 2011. A series of settlements involving other companies since then have brought signalled the limits to the smartphone patent wars, though Apple has remained embroiled in a complex series of actions against Samsung.
According to its statement on Wednesday, Apple agreed to license some patents from Nokia’s portfolio in 2011. But since then, Apple has declined offers made by Nokia to license other patents that are allegedly now being used in Apple products, according to the lawsuit.
Ilkka Rahnasto, head of Nokia’s patent business, said in a statement: “Through our sustained investment in research and development, Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices, including Apple products. After several years of negotiations trying to reach agreement to cover Apple’s use of these patents, we are now taking action to defend our rights.”
Nokia’s actions come a day after Apple filed a separate lawsuit in California federal court against a number of smaller companies accusing them of conspiring with Nokia to “extract and extort exorbitant revenues” from asserting patents.
