冰島總理因離岸公司丑聞辭職

Iceland’s prime minister resigned yesterday, thefirst casualty of the global revelations over offshorecompanies.

冰島總理西格蒙杜爾•戴維•貢勞格松(Sigmundur DavidGunnlaugsson)昨日辭職，成為全球離岸公司丑聞曝光后的首位落馬者。

For the second time in a decade the island of just320,000 -people has become a focus of globalattention over financial excesses, even as it remainsdeeply divided over the collapse of its banks in2008.

這是這個人口只有32萬的國家10年內(nèi)第二次因金融過度行為成為全球關(guān)注的焦點(diǎn)，目前冰島仍因2008年國內(nèi)銀行破產(chǎn)分歧嚴(yán)重。

“This is the second phase. The first phase was the practical part of clearing up after a massivebanking failure. What we are looking at now is the bankruptcy of politics and -certainpoliticians,” said Huginn Thorsteinsson, a leftwing political consultant.

On a day of high drama in Reykjavik, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson first tried to hang on topower by seeking the dissolution of parliament. But after Iceland’s president refused to grantthe request, Mr Gunnlaugsson decided to step down as prime minister but carry on as thehead of his centre-right Progressive party.

在冰島極具戲劇性的一天，貢勞格松起初試圖通過解散議會保留權(quán)力。但在冰島總統(tǒng)拒絕這一請求后，貢勞格松決定辭去總理職位，但仍繼續(xù)擔(dān)任他所在的中右翼進(jìn)步黨(Progressive party)主席一職。

The two-party coalition is aiming to stay in government ahead of elections next year but thatcould provoke an outcry. As many as 22,000 people on Monday took to the streets of Reykjavik— more than during the 2008-09 financial crisis — to protest against the prime minister’salleged conduct.

“It is causing huge anger in Iceland because of the connotations with the banks in the past,” MrThorsteinsson said.

Mr Gunnlaugsson once owned part of an offshore group, now controlled by his wife, thatowned claims in the Icelandic banks that collapsed in 2008, roiling the country’s financial andpolitical systems. Although the economy has recovered since the crisis, Iceland is dividedpolitically.
