Old Royal Palace

You should start your tour of the Prague Castle by exploring its first building: The Old Royal Palace. Nowadays, you cannot see all of its corners, but only a part of it. The Old Royal Palace was built using wooden materials around the 9th or 10th century and existed until the 12th century. Then a new stone Romanesque palace was built right next door by Prince Sobeslav.

This street was originally the home of the servants, jewelers, markers and guardians of the Prague Castle. You will see small houses lying next to each other when you reach Golden Lane. Those little houses were occupied until World War II. In addition, at House 22, writer Franz Kafka lived from 1916 to 1917.

You need to climb about 300 steps and 100 meters to reach the top of the church. The tower was built around the 14th century so it is very old. It has a gallery and a dome in the 16th century, which was replaced with a new one in the 18th century. In this part of your visit to the Prague Castle, you will also see the largest bell in the Czech Republic weighing around 15 tons, named Zikmund!

Between 1545 and 1574, the Rosenberg family built their own renaissance palace. After that, Rosenberg Palace became the property of Emperor Rudolf II in 1600. Until the 18th century, Rosenberg Palace retained its original style. But after that, it was completely rebuilt.
