第八集 舊地荒蕪
當(dāng)我從摩洛哥離開塞巴斯蒂安時(shí)
When I left Sebastian in Morocco,
本打算直接返回巴黎
I had intended to return directly to Paris,
但他生活費(fèi)的事情
but the business of his allowance

meant that I had to travel to London to see Bridey.

I don't know any painters.

Julia says you specialize in architecture.

I began in the long drawing room,

從房子建成后 就一直擺在那里的家具
which had stood there since it was built.
我用鉛筆勾勒出透視圖
I set out the perspective in pencil
但在用顏料之前又猶豫了
but held back from the painting

like a diver on the water's edge.

Once in, I found myself buoyed and exhilarated.

I was normally a slow and deliberate painter.
那天下午 第二天和第三天
That afternoon and all next day and the day after,
我畫得很快
I worked fast.
我不能出錯(cuò)
I could do nothing wrong.
每一段畫完后 我都會(huì)暫停 緊張
At the end of each passage, I paused, tense,
不敢開始下一步
afraid to start the next,
像個(gè)賭徒一樣 害怕好運(yùn)流轉(zhuǎn)
fearing, like a gambler, that luck must turn
成堆的籌碼輸?shù)?br>and the pile be lost.
但一點(diǎn)點(diǎn) 一分分
But bit by bit, minute by minute,
畫作逐漸成型
the thing came into being.
沒有困難
There were no difficulties.
錯(cuò)綜多樣的光影和色彩
The intricate multiplicity of light and color
構(gòu)成一體
became a whole.
畫筆的每一次揮動(dòng) 一旦落下
Each brush stroke, as soon as it was complete,
就好像原本一直就在那里
seemed to have been there always.
我能待在這看看嗎
May I stay here and watch?
嗯
Yes,
只要你不說(shuō)話
so long as you don't talk.
這是我接受的第一個(gè)作畫委托
This was my first commission.
我得抓緊時(shí)間 因?yàn)槌邪?br>I had to work against time, for the contractors
只等最后的簽名
were only waiting for the final signature

to start their work of destruction.

In spite or perhaps because of that,

for it is my vice to spend too long on a canvas,

are particular favorites of mine,

and it was their success both with myself and others

that confirmed me in what has since been my career.

Must be lovely to be able to do that.

I shall have to go over it again in the morning.

I didn't realize how far the decay had gone.
