LESSON 50 The ship on fire

第五十課 著火的船

There was joy in the ship, as she furrowed the foam;

船開動時，船上的人滿懷欣喜；

For fond hearts within her were dreaming of home.

因為她打心底里想著回家。

The young mother pressed fondly her babe to her breast,

年輕的母親溫柔地將孩子抱入懷中，

And sang a sweet song as she rocked it to rest;

一邊唱歌一邊搖晃，哄她入睡；

And the husband sat cheerily down by her side,

她的丈夫高興地坐在一旁，

And looked with delight in the face of his bride.

滿臉喜悅地看著她的妻子。

"Oh, happy!" said he, "when our roaming is o'er,

“噢，幸福！”他說，“到這次旅途結束，

We'll dwell in a cottage that stands by the shore!

我們會定居在海邊的一所小房子！

Already in fancy its roof I descry,

我看到了它迷人的屋頂，

And the smoke of its hearth curling up to the sky;

和從煙囪直沖向云霄的煙；

Its garden so green, and its vine-covered wall,

花園很綠，墻上爬滿葡萄藤，

And the kind friends awaiting to welcome us all."

善良的朋友等著歡迎我們一家人。”

Hark! hark! —what was that? Hark! hark to the shout!

聽！你聽！——那是什么聲音？聽！聽那個響聲！

"Fire! fire!"—then a tramp and a rush and a rout，

“著火了！著火了！”——隨后傳來了腳步聲，慌亂、騷動，

And an uproar of voices arose in the air:

又傳來了一聲叫喊：

And the mother knelt down; and the half-spoken prayer

母親跪下了；她在祈禱

That she offered to God in her agony wild,

她要將自己的痛苦獻給上帝，

Was, "Father, have mercy! look down on my child!"

“神父，發(fā)發(fā)慈悲吧！看看我的孩子！”
