Thereupon he stretched out his hand for his treasure;
這么想著,他伸出手拍了拍自己的錢(qián)袋子,
but no bag was to be found!
卻發(fā)現(xiàn)錢(qián)袋子不見(jiàn)了!
In a moment, he discovered his mistake,
一瞬間,他終于明白自己犯了一個(gè)怎樣的錯(cuò)誤,
and upbraided himself for disregarding the signs which his dog had made to him.
他為自己沒(méi)有注意他的狗用各種方式向他發(fā)出警告而自責(zé)不已。
He turned his horse, and rode back to the place where he had stopped.
他調(diào)轉(zhuǎn)馬頭往回趕,經(jīng)過(guò)了原先停下的地方。
He saw the marks of blood as he proceeded;
他繼續(xù)前行時(shí),看見(jiàn)路上的一大灘血跡,
but nowhere was his dog to be seen on the road.
可是他的狗卻不見(jiàn)了。
At last he reached the spot where he had rested, and there lay the forgotten bag,
最后,他回到之前坐下休息的那棵樹(shù)下,被忘記拿走的錢(qián)袋就躺在那兒,
with the poor dog, in the agonies of death, watching beside it!
邊上還有他的那只狗,到死都想著回到主人的錢(qián)袋邊看好它。
When he saw his master, he showed his joy by feebly wagging his tail.
當(dāng)它看見(jiàn)主人回來(lái)的時(shí)候,無(wú)力地?fù)u了搖尾巴表示它的喜悅。
He tried to rise, but his strength was gone;
它想爬起來(lái),但已經(jīng)沒(méi)有力氣這么做了,
and after stretching out his tongue to lick the hand that was now fondling him in deep sorrow, he closed his eyes in death.
它最后舔了舔主人的手,閉上了眼睛。而它的主人此時(shí)正愛(ài)撫著這只狗,陷入了深切的悲傷之中。
