LESSON 13 A faithful dog

第十三課 一只忠誠(chéng)的狗

A French merchant, having some money due to him, set out on horseback to receive it, accompanied by his dog.

一位法國(guó)商人騎在馬背上去討債，一邊跟著他的狗。

Having settled the business, he tied the bag of money before him, and began to return home.

收到錢之后，他把錢袋拴在馬背上，準(zhǔn)備回家。

The merchant, after riding some miles, alighted to rest himself under a tree;

走了幾里路之后，商人決定在一棵樹下休息一會(huì)，

and taking the bag of money in his hand, laid it down by his side.

于是他把錢袋從馬背上卸下來(lái)，放在他身邊。

But on remounting he forgot it.

可是休息過(guò)后，他站起來(lái)時(shí)卻把錢袋子給忘了。

The dog observing this, ran to fetch the bag;

他的狗卻發(fā)現(xiàn)了被丟掉的錢袋，往回跑想去把錢袋叼回來(lái)，

but it was too heavy for it to drag along.

可是那只袋子實(shí)在是太重了，它沒(méi)辦法叼著往前走。

It then ran after its master, and, by barking and howling, tried to tell him of his mistake.

于是它只好跑回到主人身邊，對(duì)著他又吼又叫，想告訴他錢袋丟在樹下了。

The merchant did not understand these signs;

可是，主人完全沒(méi)理解小狗的這些信號(hào)，

but the dog went on with its efforts,

但小狗并沒(méi)有放棄。

and after trying in vain to stop the horse, it at last began to bite its heels.

在徒勞無(wú)功地試了一次又一次之后，小狗終于決定用實(shí)際行動(dòng)讓馬停下來(lái)，它開始咬馬蹄的后掌。

The thought now struck the merchant that the dog had gone mad;

可是商人現(xiàn)在卻覺(jué)得他的狗瘋了，

and so, in crossing a brook, he looked back to see whether it would drink.

當(dāng)他們經(jīng)過(guò)一條小溪的時(shí)候，他停下來(lái)朝后看了看，想知道狗要不要喝水。

The animal was too intent on its object to think of stopping for this purpose;

但是，這只小狗因?yàn)樘庇诟嬖V主人他的錢袋子丟了，根本沒(méi)時(shí)間考慮停下來(lái)喝水這回事兒。

and it continued to bark and bite with greater violence than before.

于是，它繼續(xù)朝主人又吼又咬，聲音比之前更響亮。
