"I confess that I was disappointed. There was nothing. At least that was my first impression.

我承認(rèn)開始時我很失望，因?yàn)槲覜]有看到什么東西。至少我第一個印象是如此。

At the second glance, however, I perceived that there was a man standing in the Southampton Road, a small bearded man in a gray suit, who seemed to be looking in my direction.

She said nothing, but I am convinced that she had divined that I had a mirror in my hand and had seen what was behind me. She rose at once.

'Jephro,' said she, 'there is an impertinent fellow upon the road there who stares up at Miss Hunter.'

'No friend of yours, Miss Hunter?' he asked.

'不是你的朋友吧，亨特小姐？'他問。

'No, I know no one in these parts.'

'Dear me! How very impertinent! Kindly turn round and motion to him to go away.'

'哎呀，多么不禮貌！請你回過身去揮手叫他走開。'

'Surely it would be better to take no notice.'

'當(dāng)然還是不理他更好些吧。'

'No, no, we should have him loitering here always. Kindly turn round and wave him away like that.'

'不，不，那他會常常在這里游蕩的。請你轉(zhuǎn)過身去，像這樣揮手叫他走開。'

I did as I was told, and at the same instant Mrs. Rucastle drew down the blind.
