He had ceased to strike and was gazing up at the ventilator

他已停止了抽打，朝上注視著通氣孔，

when suddenly there broke from the silence of the night the most horrible cry to which I have ever listened.

緊接著在黑夜的寂靜之中，突然爆發(fā)出一聲我有生以來未聽到過的最可怕的尖叫。

It swelled up louder and louder, a hoarse yell of pain and fear and anger all mingled in the one dreadful shriek.

而且叫聲越來越高，這是交織著痛苦、恐懼和憤怒的令人可怖的尖聲哀號(hào)。

They say that away down in the village, and even in the distant parsonage, that cry raised the sleepers from their beds.

據(jù)說這喊聲把遠(yuǎn)在村里，甚至遠(yuǎn)教區(qū)的人們都從熟睡中驚醒。

It struck cold to our hearts, and I stood gazing at Holmes,

and he at me, until the last echoes of it had died away into the silence from which it rose.

"What can it mean?" I gasped.

With a grave face he lit the lamp and led the way down the corridor.

他點(diǎn)著了燈，帶頭走過過道，表情非常嚴(yán)峻。

Twice he struck at the chamber door without any reply from within.

他敲了兩次臥室的房門，里面沒有回音.

Then he turned the handle and entered, I at his heels, with the cocked pistol in my hand.

他隨手轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)了門把手，進(jìn)入房內(nèi)，我緊跟在他身后，手里握著扳起擊鐵的手槍。
