We had pulled up in front of a large villa which stood within its own grounds.

我們?cè)谝蛔髣e墅前停車(chē)，這座別墅坐落在庭園之中。

A stable-boy had run out to the horse's head,

這時(shí)一個(gè)馬僮跑了過(guò)來(lái)，拉住馬頭，

and springing down I followed Holmes up the small, winding gravel-drive which led to the house.

我跳下車(chē)來(lái)跟著福爾摩斯走上了一條通往樓前的、小小彎曲的碎石道。

As we approached, the door flew open, and a little blonde woman stood in the opening,

我們走近樓前時(shí)，樓門(mén)洞開(kāi)，一位白膚金發(fā)的小婦人立在門(mén)口，

clad in some sort of light mousseline de soie, with a touch of fluffy pink chiffon at her neck and wrists.

She stood with her figure outlined against the flood of light, one hand upon the door, one half-raised in her eagerness,

她在燈光輝映下，亭亭玉立，一手扶門(mén)，一手半舉，情極熱切，

her body slightly bent, her head and face protruded, with eager eyes and parted lips, a standing question.

她微微彎腰，探首向前，渴望的目光凝視著我們，雙唇微張欲語(yǔ)，好象是在提出詢問(wèn)的樣子。

"Well?" she cried, "well?"

"??？"她喊道，"怎么樣？"

And then, seeing that there were two of us,

隨后，她看出我們是兩個(gè)人，

she gave a cry of hope which sank into a groan as she saw that my companion shook his head and shrugged his shoulders.

起先還充滿了希望地喊著；可是看到我的伙伴搖頭聳肩，就轉(zhuǎn)而發(fā)出痛苦的呻吟了。

"No good news?" "None." "No bad?" "No."

"沒(méi)有好消息嗎？""沒(méi)有。""沒(méi)有壞消息嗎？""沒(méi)有。"

"Thank God for that. But come in. You must be weary, for you have had a long day."

"謝天謝地！請(qǐng)進(jìn)來(lái)吧！你們一定很辛苦了，足足累了這么一整天。"

"This is my friend, Dr. Watson. He has been of most vital use to me in several of my cases,

"這是我的朋友，華生醫(yī)生。在過(guò)去的幾個(gè)案件里，他對(duì)我的幫助極大，

and a lucky chance has made it possible for me to bring him out and associate him with this investigation."

"I am delighted to see you," said she, pressing my hand warmly.

"我很高興見(jiàn)到您，"她說(shuō)，熱烈地和我握手。

"You will, I am sure, forgive anything that may be wanting in our arrangements,

when you consider the blow which has come so suddenly upon us."

"My dear madam," said I, "I am an old campaigner, and if I were not I can very well see that no apology is needed.
