The singular incident made, as you may think, the deepest impression upon me,

and I pondered over it and turned it every way in my mind without being able to make anything of it.

Yet I could not shake off the vague feeling of dread which it left behind,

though the sensation grew less keen as the weeks passed,
雖然隨著時光的流逝，不安之感逐漸緩和，
and nothing happened to disturb the usual routine of our lives.

I could see a change in my uncle, however.
盡管如此，我仍能看出我的伯父從此舉止異常。
He drank more than ever, and he was less inclined for any sort of society.
他酗酒狂飲更甚于往日，并且更加不愿意置身于任何社交場所。
Most of his time he would spend in his room, with the door locked upon the inside,
他的大部分時間都消磨在他自己的深室之內(nèi)，而且室內(nèi)門上還上了鎖；
but sometimes he would emerge in a sort of drunken frenzy and would burst out of the house
但是他有時又象酒后發(fā)狂，從屋子里一沖而出，
and tear about the garden with a revolver in his hand, screaming out that he was afraid of no man,
手握左輪手槍，在花園中狂奔亂跑，尖聲叫喊，說什么他誰也不怕，
and that he was not to be cooped up, like a sheep in a pen, by man or devil.
還說不管是人是鬼，誰也不能把他象綿羊似地圈禁起來。
When these hot fits were over, however, he would rush tumultuously in at the door and lock and bar it behind him,
等到這陣激烈的突然發(fā)作過去以后，他又心慌意亂地急急跑回房間里去，把門鎖了起來，還插上門閂，
like a man who can brazen it out no longer against the terror which lies at the roots of his soul.
好象一個內(nèi)心深處滲透了恐懼的人，無顏再虛張聲勢地裝下去那樣。
At such times I have seen his face, even on a cold day, glisten with moisture, as though it were new raised from a basin.
在這種時刻，我見到他的臉，即使在寒冬臘月，也是冷汗涔涔、濕漉漉的，似乎剛從洗臉盆里抬起頭來。
