"It's all clear," he whispered. "Have you the chisel and the bags? Great Scott! Jump, Archie, jump, and I'll swing for it!"

他小聲地說："一切都很順當。你把鑿子和袋子都帶來了嗎？天啊，不好了！阿爾奇，跳，趕緊跳，別的由我來對付！"

Sherlock Holmes had sprung out and seized the intruder by the collar.

歇洛克·福爾摩斯一躍而起，跳過去一把揪住這個偷偷潛入的人的領子。

The other dived down the hole, and I heard the sound of rending cloth as Jones clutched at his skirts.

另一個人猛然一下子跳到洞里去了。我聽到撕破衣服的聲音，瓊斯當時一把抓住了他的衣服的下擺。

The light flashed upon the barrel of a revolver,

一枝左輪手槍的槍管在亮光中閃現了一下，

but Holmes's hunting crop came down on the man's wrist, and the pistol clinked upon the stone floor.

但福爾摩斯的打獵鞭子驟然打在那個人的手腕上，手槍當地一聲掉在石板地上。

"It's no use, John Clay," said Holmes blandly. "You have no chance at all."

福爾摩斯無動于衷似地說："約翰·克萊，那是徒勞的，你逃不過這一關了。"

"So I see," the other answered with the utmost coolness.

對方極其冷靜地回答說："我看是這樣。

"I fancy that my pal is all right, though I see you have got his coat-tails."

我想我的好友會平安無事的，雖然我看見你們揪住了他的衣角。"

"There are three men waiting for him at the door," said Holmes.

福爾摩斯說："三個人正在那邊門口等著他呢。"

"Oh, indeed! You seem to have done the thing very completely. I must compliment you."

"噢，真的，你們辦事似乎很周到。我應該向你們致敬！"

"And I you," Holmes answered. "Your red-headed idea was very new and effective."

福爾摩斯回答道："彼此，彼此。你的那個紅頭發(fā)點子很新穎，也很有效。"

"You'll see your pal again presently," said Jones.

瓊斯說："你將會同你的伙伴愉快地會面的。

"He's quicker at climbing down holes than I am. Just hold out while I fix the derbies."

他鉆進洞里的動作比我來得快。伸出手來，讓我銬上。"

"I beg that you will not touch me with your filthy hands," remarked our prisoner as the handcuffs clattered upon his wrists.

當手銬把我們的俘虜的手腕扣上的時候，他說："我請求你們不要用你們的臟手碰我。

"You may not be aware that I have royal blood in my veins.

你們也許不知道我是皇族后裔。

Have the goodness, also, when you address me always to say 'sir' and 'please.'"

我還要請你們跟我說話時，在任何時候都要用'先生'和'請'字。"

"All right," said Jones with a stare and a snigger.

瓊斯瞪大眼睛，忍住了笑說："好吧，

"Well, would you please, sir, march upstairs, where we can get a cab to carry your Highness to the police-station?"

唔，'先生'請你往臺階上走吧，到了上面，我們可以弄輛馬車把閣下送到警察局去?？梢詥?？"

"That is better," said John Clay serenely.

約翰·克萊安詳地說："這就好些。"

He made a sweeping bow to the three of us and walked quietly off in the custody of the detective.

他向我們三人很快地鞠了個躬，然后默默無言地在警探的監(jiān)護下走了出去。
