He carried a broad-brimmed hat in his hand, while he wore across the upper part of his face,
他手里拿著一頂大檐帽，臉的上半部
extending down past the cheekbones, a black vizard mask,
戴著一只黑色的蓋過顴骨的遮護面具。
which he had apparently adjusted that very moment, for his hand was still raised to it as he entered.
顯然他剛剛整理過面具，因為進屋時，他的手還停留在面具上。
From the lower part of the face he appeared to be a man of strong character,
由臉的下半部看，象是個性格堅強的人。
with a thick, hanging lip, and a long, straight chin suggestive of resolution pushed to the length of obstinacy.
他嘴唇厚而下垂，下巴又長又直，顯示出一種近乎頑固的果斷，
"You had my note?" he asked with a deep harsh voice and a strongly marked German accent.
"你收到我寫的條子了嗎？"他問道，聲音深沉、沙啞，帶著濃重的德國口音。
"I told you that I would call." He looked from one to the other of us, as if uncertain which to address.

"Pray take a seat," said Holmes. "This is my friend and colleague, Dr. Watson,

who is occasionally good enough to help me in my cases. Whom have I the honour to address?"
他經(jīng)常大力幫助我辦案子。請問，我應該怎么稱呼您？"
"You may address me as the Count Von Kramm, a Bohemian nobleman.
"你可以稱呼我馮·克拉姆伯爵。我是波希米亞貴族。
I understand that this gentleman, your friend, is a man of honour and discretion, whom I may trust with a matter of the most extreme importance.
我想這位先生--你的朋友，是位值得尊敬和十分審慎的人，我也可以把極為重要的事托付給他。
If not, I should much prefer to communicate with you alone."
否則，我寧愿跟你單獨談。"
I rose to go, but Holmes caught me by the wrist and pushed me back into my chair.
我站起身來要走，可是福爾摩斯抓住我的手腕，把我推回到原來的扶手椅里。
"It is both, or none," said he. "You may say before this gentleman anything which you may say to me."
"要談兩個一起談，要就不談，"他對來客說，"在這位先生跟前，凡是您可以跟我談的您盡管談好了。"
The Count shrugged his broad shoulders. "Then I must begin," said he,

"by binding you both to absolute secrecy for two years; at the end of that time the matter will be of no importance.
我得約定你們二位在兩年內絕對保密，兩年后這事就無關重要了。
At present it is not too much to say that it is of such weight it may have an influence upon European history."
目前說它重要得也許可以影響整個歐洲歷史的進程都不過分。"
"I promise," said Holmes. "And I."
"我保證遵約，"福爾摩斯答道。"我也是。"
