雙語脫口秀《老外來了》:美國的研究生，大多是晚上上課?

之前的podcast中，我們聊過了在美國讀本科，今天我們給大家講講在美國讀研究生的情況。

首先，先來了解一些基本的詞匯，這些用英文怎么說？

l本科：Bachelor’s Degree

l研究生：Master’s Degree

l研究生在讀：a masterstudent

l我是研究生在讀：I’ma masterstudent.

l我是碩士學歷：I got a Master’s Degree.

l博士：Doctorate/ PhD（全稱是Philosophic Doctor，字面意思是哲學博士學位，泛指“學術研究型博士學位”）

l你打算攻讀博士學位嗎：Are you planning to do aPhD?

1.Bipasha個人讀研情況

l讀研的學校：American University（美國大學）

l大學所在城市：Washington, DC（華盛頓特區(qū)）

l所在的學院：School of International Service（美國大學國際服務學院）

l就讀的專業(yè)：International Affairs（國際事務）

l具體研究方向：Comparative Regional Study for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, Foreign Policy and Security（亞太以及中東地區(qū)外交政策與安全比較區(qū)域研究）

l研究生讀幾年：2 years（the typical for full-time student全日制學生一般都是2年）

Bipasha覺得自己的專業(yè)是definitely interesting（相當有趣），因為總是能學習和接觸new things。但讀研也是很累的，用Bipasha自己的話說：

太累了！As a master’s student, 24 hours is not enough?。ㄗ鳛橐幻T士，24小時根本不夠用?。?/p>

2.Bipasha讀研日常分享

Bipasha的讀研typical routine for 24 hours（常規(guī)日程）：

wake up階段會makeherself some tea or coffee（泡茶或沖咖啡），然后freshen up（梳洗打扮一番），之后就是做一些準備工作，get ready for work or go to campus（準備好工作或去學校）。因為研究生和教授白天都有自己的工作，所以shehad classes in the evening from 5:30pm to 11:00pm（下午5點半到晚上11點之間上課）。Bipasha白天除了會處理自己常規(guī)工作外，有時還會準備podcast，錄節(jié)目。這樣的日程，真的是pretty overwhelming（難以承受）。

周末能不能休息，還得看ifshe islucky or not。大多數(shù)時候，Bipashahad classes all weekend from 8:00am-6:00pmfor a special internship（因為Bipasha在做一個特別的實習，所以她從早上8點到下午6點，都要上課）。

To sum it up（總結起來），周內(nèi)Bipasha白天工作，晚上上課，有時還得錄節(jié)目，周末滿課。It is pretty tiring（太累了）！這何止是24 hours is not enough，其實是7days a weekisnot enough!

也并不是每一個研究生都像Bipasha一樣累，要看個人情況，Bipasha是想do multiple things in a short time（短時間內(nèi)完成很多事情）。

在美讀研究生，你可以選擇full-time（全日制的），也可以選擇part-time（非全日制的）。It depends from person to person how you want to make your schedule（這就要看你自己的日程是如何安排的了）。

3.在美國讀研有什么特點

(1)Class time上課時間

研究生的上課時間是the most interesting feature（最有趣的一個特點）。

In the US,most graduate classes are at night after work hours.研究生課程都安排到晚上。

這樣的話，學生在business hours（上班時間）就可以work regular job（正常工作），and then attend classes in the evening（晚上上課）。

這種上課方式是not uncommon，不只是在美國大學這樣，很多美國的大學研究生也是這樣上課。

(2)tuition for postgraduate study學費

Everyone has a different financial situation.每個人都有不同的財務情況。

比如，杜克大學的Jerry之前就說過，在美讀研不用交學費，但這不是絕對。

Bipasha was on an academic scholarship（獲得了學術獎學金），所以就不用付學費了，剩下的就基本是personal expenses（日常生活的開支）了，比如說house rent & utilities（房租及水電費），grocery（食品雜貨）, outdoor activities（戶外活動）, restaurants（餐飲）, books, and miscellaneous（其他雜項）。

(3)Form of class上課形式

在美國的大學里，不存在“行政班”這個概念，一個班里多少人depends on the type of classes you are taking（要看你修的是哪一門課程）。

像門檻比較低的introductory courses（入門類課程）have more people，但是honors and capstone courses（榮譽課程以及頂點課程），就要看the number of acceptances by professor（教授要收的學生數(shù)）。

Bipasha上的capstone course，需要apply and not everyone is accepted，所以只有10個人，但其他的課程，也是小課堂，一個班was 20-30 students。

*capstone courses頂點課程，是美國中學或高校針對臨近畢業(yè)的學生開設的綜合性課程。

(4)Courses上課內(nèi)容

研究生上課的內(nèi)容是less theoretical（理論性較少），但是more practical（更加實用），解決實際問題。

Because you are trying to become an expert.研究生課程是要培養(yǎng)專家。

所以，他們會有real life examples（現(xiàn)實生活中的例子）。學生能夠talk to people actually working in the field（和真正在現(xiàn)場工作的人交談），并且這些人realistically solve issues（能解決實際問題）。

研究生也會有assignment（作業(yè)）。

比如說，Bipasha最后一學期的作業(yè)是：write a policy memo on U.S. National Security Strategy for Terrorism and Counterterrorism（寫一份關于美國恐怖主義和反恐國家安全戰(zhàn)略的政策備忘錄）。教授也會認真批改。

Bipasha的教授就在NATO（北大西洋公約組織）工作，所以，教授直接就可以gave you critical feedback on the paper（對學生的論文進行批判性反饋），告訴你if it is acceptable in the real world or not（你的想法在現(xiàn)實世界里能不能行的通）。

(5)Teaching assistant助教

美國的研究生課堂里，有很多學生會做teaching assistants（助教）。Bipasha就做過。

會有工資，they are usually minimum wage jobs.（助教一般是最低薪資的工作）。在華盛頓，大約時薪是$15.20/hour。

想要申請做助教，要么是good at subject（擅長這門學科），或者是you have already scored well（成績好）。

助教要做的工作就是：你已經(jīng)完成你的課程后，你就可以做助教to help other students the following semester（下學期幫助其他學生），或者是，you do research and assist the professors to plan lectures（你要做研究，并協(xié)助教授們準備講座）。

(6)Flexibility選課靈活性

There is a lot of flexibility regarding the subject you want to study and the combination of things you want to do.你可以根據(jù)自己的愛好靈活地選科目。

比如說，你可以be a Master in Business with a psychology focus（你可以成為心理學專業(yè)的商科碩士）。Bipasha就有朋友who are doing MBA with a data science focus（攻讀數(shù)據(jù)科學專業(yè)MBA）。
