英語(yǔ)早間課堂:教您一招說(shuō)婚姻(3)

各位親愛(ài)的朋友們，非常高興您如約守候早間課堂，我是Juliet。上回我留給了大家一個(gè)懸念：今天要和大家一起來(lái)分享一個(gè)會(huì)讓人望文生義的與“make an offer of marriage”意思相同的說(shuō)法，究竟是什么呢?我們來(lái)先聽(tīng)下面的2個(gè)句子：

例句-1：He has been trying for weeks to pluck up the courage topop the question to her.

例句-2：Mary has been waithing months for Bob to pop the question, but up to now he hasn't.

在我們剛才聽(tīng)到的2個(gè)例句中，我們都可以聽(tīng)到同一個(gè)詞語(yǔ)：pop the question。這是一條動(dòng)詞性習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)。習(xí)語(yǔ)中的pop作為動(dòng)詞是“發(fā)出短促清脆的爆破聲”的意思，question是指“問(wèn)題，疑問(wèn)”。Pop the question字面意思就是“迸出個(gè)疑問(wèn)”，引申為“make a proposal of marriag”的意思，意思是“提出結(jié)婚”，亦即“求婚”。要表述“向某人求婚”，在短語(yǔ)的后面加上介詞to即可，即：pop the question to somebody。

使用這個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)時(shí)，注意它適用于口語(yǔ)中，是非正式書(shū)面用語(yǔ)。此外，quesiton雖然是可數(shù)名詞，我們可以加定冠詞或者是不定冠詞或者是物主代詞，但是在這里只能夠用定冠詞the，不能用其他的冠詞或者是物主代詞。因?yàn)檫@是一個(gè)習(xí)語(yǔ)，有的習(xí)語(yǔ)是不能用語(yǔ)法來(lái)衡量的。再者，pop the question中的question指代婚姻(Marriage)，當(dāng)然要用“the”。

Eg.As soon as she came to work here, she set her cap at the young man in the office.

例句-2：Actually I care for her, so I think I'm going to pop the question to her.

Eg.I am wondering whether they will care for us all to go there.

例句-3：John, supposed to be so cold and so ambitious, formally popped the qeuestion to Miss Bell.

注解：supposed to be so cold and so ambitious是過(guò)去分詞短語(yǔ)做后置定語(yǔ)修飾名詞John。

例句-4：She's popped the question to him in her rhymes.

她已經(jīng)在詩(shī)行中流露出向他求婚之意了。

現(xiàn)在我們知道我們最初聽(tīng)到的2個(gè)例句中的關(guān)鍵詞語(yǔ)pop the question的意思，最后我們就回到它們之中來(lái)看它們的意思。

例句-1：He has been trying for weeks to pluck up the courage to pop the question to her.

這句話是說(shuō)：幾個(gè)星期以來(lái)，他一直鼓起勇氣向他求婚。

注解：注解1：pluck up：鼓起(勇氣)，振作精神

Eg.He can't pluck up the courage to leave home.

他鼓不起離開(kāi)家的勇氣。
