英語早間課堂:教您一招說婚姻(3)

各位親愛的朋友們，非常高興您如約守候早間課堂，我是Juliet。上回我留給了大家一個(gè)懸念：今天要和大家一起來分享一個(gè)會(huì)讓人望文生義的與“make an offer of marriage”意思相同的說法，究竟是什么呢?我們來先聽下面的2個(gè)句子：

例句-1：He has been trying for weeks to pluck up the courage topop the question to her.

例句-2：Mary has been waithing months for Bob to pop the question, but up to now he hasn't.

在我們剛才聽到的2個(gè)例句中，我們都可以聽到同一個(gè)詞語：pop the question。這是一條動(dòng)詞性習(xí)慣用語。習(xí)語中的pop作為動(dòng)詞是“發(fā)出短促清脆的爆破聲”的意思，question是指“問題，疑問”。Pop the question字面意思就是“迸出個(gè)疑問”，引申為“make a proposal of marriag”的意思，意思是“提出結(jié)婚”，亦即“求婚”。要表述“向某人求婚”，在短語的后面加上介詞to即可，即：pop the question to somebody。

使用這個(gè)習(xí)語時(shí)，注意它適用于口語中，是非正式書面用語。此外，quesiton雖然是可數(shù)名詞，我們可以加定冠詞或者是不定冠詞或者是物主代詞，但是在這里只能夠用定冠詞the，不能用其他的冠詞或者是物主代詞。因?yàn)檫@是一個(gè)習(xí)語，有的習(xí)語是不能用語法來衡量的。再者，pop the question中的question指代婚姻(Marriage)，當(dāng)然要用“the”。

我們再來看四個(gè)例句：

例句-1：Betty has set her cap at Jack for many years and in the end she finally gets him to pop the question.

Betty追求Jack很多年了，她終于使Jack來向她求婚了。

Eg.As soon as she came to work here, she set her cap at the young man in the office.

Eg.She'll set her cap at you, I dare say.

例句-2：Actually I care for her, so I think I'm going to pop the question to her.

Eg.I am wondering whether they will care for us all to go there.

Eg.We don't care for these new-fashioned ideas.

例句-3：John, supposed to be so cold and so ambitious, formally popped the qeuestion to Miss Bell.

給大家認(rèn)為冷淡且野心勃勃的John最后Bell小姐正式求婚了。

注解：supposed to be so cold and so ambitious是過去分詞短語做后置定語修飾名詞John。

例句-4：She's popped the question to him in her rhymes.

她已經(jīng)在詩行中流露出向他求婚之意了。

現(xiàn)在我們知道我們最初聽到的2個(gè)例句中的關(guān)鍵詞語pop the question的意思，最后我們就回到它們之中來看它們的意思。

這句話是說：幾個(gè)星期以來，他一直鼓起勇氣向他求婚。

Eg.He can't pluck up the courage to leave home.

他鼓不起離開家的勇氣。

Eg.He couldn't pluck up enough courage to ask her to go out with him.

他不能鼓起足夠的勇氣請她一起外出。

例句-2：Mary has been waithing months for Bob to pop the question, but up to now he hasn't.

Mary一直等Bob來向她求婚，但是等了幾個(gè)月還是沒等到Bob開口。

注解：up to now：迄今，直到現(xiàn)在

Eg.Her life has run smoothly up to now.
