顫抖的大地又一次披上了更幽深的黑暗的外衣。

Anon, the heavens were rent with lightning, which nothing could have quenched but the descending deluge.

不久之后，天空劃過一道道閃電，暴雨傾盆而下。

Cataracts poured down from the lowering firmament.

從烏云壓得很低的蒼穹，大瀑布一般的雨向大地傾瀉。

For an instant, the horses dashed madly forward; beast and rider blinded and stifled by the gushing rain, and gasping for breath.

頃刻間，馬兒發(fā)瘋似的向前猛沖，不論馬兒還是騎馬的行路人都被瓢潑大雨遮擋住了視線，氣都喘不上來了。

Shelter was nowhere. The quivering beasts reared, and snorted, and sank upon their knees, dismounting their riders.

瑟瑟發(fā)抖的馬兒向后倒退著，發(fā)出很響的鼻息，雙膝顫抖著向下堆著，將騎手掀下馬來。

He had scarcely spoken, when there burst forth a terrific noise, they knew not what;

當(dāng)爆出駭人的聲響時，他一言不發(fā)，人們不曉得怎么會這樣。他們不清楚是怎么回事，

a rush, they could not understand; a vibration which shook them on their horses.

只是匆忙趕路。一陣地動山搖，他們在馬上直搖晃。

Every terror sank before the roar of the cataract.

在聽到大瀑布的轟鳴聲之前，所有的恐懼都沉在每個人的心底。

It seemed that the mighty mountain, unable to support its weight of waters, shook to the foundation.

仿佛巍峨的高山也無法負(fù)擔(dān)山洪的重壓似的，連它的根部也在搖晃。

A lake had burst upon its summit, and the cataract became a falling ocean.

湖水傾泛，大瀑布匯成了海洋。

The source of the great deep appeared to be discharging itself over the range of mountains; the great gray peak tottered on its foundation!

最深處的水源似乎流向各山脈，遠(yuǎn)處隱約可見的峰頂好像也晃了起來!

It shook!—it fell! and buried in its ruins the castle, the village, and the bridge!

它在搖晃!搖搖欲墜!城堡、村莊和橋梁夷為平地了!
