他們環(huán)顧四周，盼望眼前不再是荒涼的景象。

Immense branches were shivered from the largest trees; small ones were entirely stripped of their leaves;

那些長(zhǎng)得最高大的樹(shù)濃密的樹(shù)葉搖曳顫抖著，而小樹(shù)的枝葉則完全脫落了。

the long grass was bowed to the earth; the waters were whirled in eddies out of the little rivulets;

the frightened animals of the plain, almost suffocated by the impetuosity of the wind, sought safety and found destruction;

原野上受驚的動(dòng)物被鋪天蓋地的大風(fēng)刮得窒息了，到處尋找能避風(fēng)的安全所在，最后倒地不起。

some of the largest trees were torn up by the roots; the sluices of the mountains were filled, and innumerable torrents rushed down the before empty gullies.

那些大樹(shù)有的被風(fēng)連根拔起，山上洪流卷起數(shù)不清的狂潮，朝溪谷奔瀉而下。

The heavens now open, and the lightning and thunder contend with the horrors of the wind.

這時(shí)，天空敞開(kāi)裂口，電閃雷鳴與駭人的狂風(fēng)展開(kāi)一場(chǎng)競(jìng)賽。

In a moment, all was again hushed. Dead silence succeeded the bellow of the thunder, the roar of the wind,
