In arms the Austrian phalanx stood,

面對(duì)奧匈帝國荷槍實(shí)彈的士兵，

A living wall, a human wood!

一座呼吸的墻，一道生命的叢林。

A wall, where every conscious stone

墻上，緊密挽手的每塊石頭，

Seemed to its kindred thousands grown;

綿亙著，成千上萬的意志凝聚，

A rampart all assaults to bear,

血肉之軀，勇猛地抵御外來進(jìn)攻，

Till time to dust their frames should wear

抵命而立，直到時(shí)間將其蹂躪成灰。

A wood like that enchanted grove,

樹林，仿佛施以魔鬼般夢(mèng)魘，

In which, with fiends, Rinaldo strove,

惡魔，肆無忌憚地施虐橫行，

Where every silent tree possessed A spirit prisoned in its breast,

Which the first stroke of coming strife Would startle into hideous life:

So dense, so still, the Austrians stood,

奧匈隊(duì)列，沉默冷酷密不透風(fēng)，

A living wall, a human wood!

Impregnable their front appears,

奧匈軍隊(duì)列，堅(jiān)不可摧，

All horrent with projected spears,

無數(shù)枝，毛骨悚然的槍矛豎起，

Whose polished points before them shine,

刀尖锃亮，陽光下刺眼奪目，

From flank to flank, one brilliant line,

排列齊整，彰顯出威嚴(yán)武力，

Bright as the breakers' splendors run Along the billows to the sun.

猶如無數(shù)，細(xì)碎浪花的翻騰奔涌，撲向太陽，血色天空中一抹瑰麗。

Opposed to these, a hovering band,

大戰(zhàn)當(dāng)前，高昂的群情激奮，

Contending for their native laud;

高聲謳歌，民族奮起的精神 ，

Peasants, whose new-found strength had broke From manly necks the ignoble yoke,

農(nóng)家子弟，潛在力量訇然爆發(fā)，男子漢脖頸，留有奴隸的卑微印記，

And forged their fetters into swords,

賦權(quán)平等，為心中的耶和華上帝，

On equal terms to fight their lords;

將身上鎖鏈，鍛造成刀劍銳利無比。
