There's a different expression, to start in on someone — on a person, 這里還有一個(gè)不同的表達(dá)，“to start in on someone(a person)”，

and if you start in on a person — on your brother, on your wife, 如果你“start in on a person(你的兄弟，你的妻子)”，

that means that you are criticizing them — you're saying something bad — something negative about them. 意思是你正在批評(píng)他們，你正在說他們的壞話。

When I was younger, if I didn't do my homework, which was often, my mother would start in on me, meaning she would criticize me. 我年輕的時(shí)候，如果我不做作業(yè)，那是常有的事，我媽媽就會(huì)“start in on me”，意思是她就會(huì)批評(píng)我。

"Jeffrey, do your homework!" The only person who calls me "Jeffrey" is my mother. “杰弗里，做你的作業(yè)!”只有我媽媽會(huì)叫我“杰弗里”。

Back to our story, I said that my phone rang and it was "my project manager, Julie." 言歸正傳，我說我的電話響了，是“我的項(xiàng)目經(jīng)理朱莉”打來的。

The manager is the person that is in charge of a certain group of people — someone who is the boss, 經(jīng)理就是管理特定人群的人，就是老板，

and a project is just a set of things for you to do, usually related to each other. 而項(xiàng)目就是一系列需要你做的事，通常這些事情互相關(guān)聯(lián)。

Well, my project manager, who's like my boss, "asked me to come in for a conference call with our head office." 那個(gè)，我的項(xiàng)目經(jīng)理，她就像我老板一樣，“通知我參加我們總部的多人電話會(huì)議。”

A conference, "conference," call is a telephone call with three or more people. 電話會(huì)議(conference)是指三人或三人以上的電話會(huì)談。

And, that's very common in American business and in international business to have a conference call so more than one person can talk on the telephone. 而且，電話會(huì)議在美國企業(yè)和跨國企業(yè)中極為普遍，這樣多個(gè)人都能進(jìn)行電話交談。
