When called upon to recite, he rose tranquil and happy, and very seldom made mistakes.
當叫他背誦時，他平靜而愉快地站來，幾乎很少出錯。
The officers of the college had a high opinion of him, and he was respected by all the students.
大學教務長對他評價頗高，所有同學都很尊敬他。
There was, in the college, a society made up of all the best scholars.
大學里有個由成績最好的學生們組成的社團。
Charles was chosen a member of that society.
查爾斯被選為其中的一員。
It was the custom to choose some one of the society to deliver a public address every year.
按慣例，每年都會從社團里選出一人進行公開演講。
This honor was conferred on Charles; and he had studied so diligently, and read so much,
這個榮譽被授予了查理。他刻苦地學習，閱讀了大量書籍，
that he delivered an address which was very interesting to all who heard it.
所以他的演講對所有聽眾來說都非常有趣。
At last he graduated , As It Is called; that is, he finished his collegiate course, and received his degree.
最后，按照慣常的說法，他畢業(yè)了，即他完成了大學課程，拿到了學位。
