I gave you, in the last lesson, the history of George Jones, an idle boy, and showed you the consequences of his idleness.

I shall now give you the history of Charles Bullard, a classmate of George.
現(xiàn)在我要給你們講講喬治的同學(xué)——查爾斯.布拉德——的故事。
Charles was about the same age as George, and did not possess superior talents.
查爾斯和喬治同歲，并沒有什么過人的天資。
Indeed, I doubt whether he was equal to him in natural powers of mind.
事實(shí)上，我都不確定在自然的腦力方面他能否比得上喬治。
But Charles was a hard student.
但查爾斯是個(gè)努力的學(xué)生。
When quite young, he was always careful and diligent in school.
很小的時(shí)候，他就認(rèn)真勤奮地學(xué)習(xí)。
Sometimes, when there was a very hard lesson, instead of going out to play during recess, he would stay in to study.
有時(shí)當(dāng)遇到很有難度的課程時(shí)，他在課間休息時(shí)不去玩耍而是留在室內(nèi)繼續(xù)學(xué)習(xí)。
He had resolved that his first object should be to get his lessons well, and then he could play with a good conscience .
他認(rèn)定了自己的第一目標(biāo)是把課文學(xué)好，然后才毫無顧慮地去玩兒。
He loved play as well as anybody, and was one of the best players on the ground.
和任何人一樣，他也喜歡玩，而且在操場上是最好的選手之一。
I hardly ever saw any boy catch a ball better than he could.
我沒見過其他人接球比他接得更好。
When playing any game, everyone was glad to get Charles on his side.
做游戲時(shí)，大家都愿意和查爾斯在一組。
I have said that Charles would sometimes stay in at recess.
我剛才說道，查爾斯有時(shí)課間會(huì)待在屋里。
This, however, was very seldom; it was only when the lessons were very hard indeed.
但這種情況很少發(fā)生，只有在課程的確非常難時(shí)才會(huì)這樣。
Generally, he was among the first on the playground, and he was also among the first to go into school when called.
總的來說，他都是第一批去操場上玩耍的，也是到時(shí)間第一批回來上課的。
Hard study gave him a relish for play, and play again gave him a relish for hard study;
努力地學(xué)習(xí)讓他享受到玩耍的樂趣，而玩耍也是他努力學(xué)習(xí)的調(diào)劑，
so he was happy both in school and out.
因此他課上課下都很快樂。
The preceptor could not help liking him, for he always had his lessons well committed, and never gave him any trouble.
輔導(dǎo)員自然很喜歡他，因?yàn)樗φn總是很好，不給老師找麻煩。
