The home of little Jeannette is far away, high up among the mountains.
小珍妮特的家很遠(yuǎn)，在大山里高高的地方。
Let us call her our mountain sister.
我們就叫她山妹子吧！
There are many things you would like to hear about her,
關(guān)于她的許多故事你一定很想聽，
but I can only tell you now how she goes with her father and brother, in the autumn, to help gather nuts for the long winter.
可是在這里我只告訴你，她幫著父親和哥哥在秋天里采集栗子以備長(zhǎng)冬之用的情形。
A little way down the mountain side is a chest nut wood.
往山下走一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)路，是一片栗子林。
Did you ever see a chest nut tree?
你是否見過栗子樹呢？
In the spring its branches are covered with bunches of creamy flowers, like long tassels.
春天里，栗子樹的枝干被奶油一樣的花朵密密麻麻地覆蓋著，像長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的流蘇。
All the hot summer these are turning into sweet nuts, wrapped safely in large, prickly, green balls.
夏天，這些花兒會(huì)變成甜美的板栗，完好無損地包裹在多刺的綠色大球球里。
But when the frost of autumn comes, these prickly balls turn brown, and crack open.
到了秋天霧起的時(shí)候，這些帶刺的球球就變成褐色，爆裂開來，
Then you may see inside one,two, three, and even four, sweet, brown nuts.
這時(shí)你會(huì)看見里面有一個(gè)、兩個(gè)、三個(gè)，甚至四個(gè)褐色的甜栗子。
When her father says, one night at supper time, "I think there will be a frost tonight," Jeannette knows very well what to do.
有一天，晚飯時(shí)分，珍妮特的父親說：“我想今天晚上會(huì)起霧。”珍妮特很清楚地知道將要做什么。
She dances away early in the evening to her little bed, made in a box built up against the wall.
當(dāng)天晚上，她輕快地跳著舞步回到自己的小床邊。
Soon she falls asleep to dream about the chest nut wood, and the little brook that springs from rock to rock down under the tall, dark trees.
很快她就沉入了夢(mèng)鄉(xiāng)，夢(mèng)見栗子樹林，還有林間的小溪，在高大而濃密的樹林間，漫流在巖石上。
She wakes with the first daylight, and is out of bed in a minute, when she hears her father'scheerful call, "Come, children; it is time to be off."
伴隨著第一縷晨光醒來，她馬上起床，就聽到父親高興地呼喚：“來吧，孩子們，是時(shí)候出發(fā)了。”
Their dinner is ready in a large basket.
他們的午餐已經(jīng)備好，放在一個(gè)大籃子里。
The donkey stands before the door with great bags for the nuts hanging at each side.
驢子已經(jīng)站立在門前等候，兩側(cè)馱著用來裝栗子的大袋子。
They go merrily over the CRIsp, white frost to the chest nut trees.
他們輕快地踏過易脆的白霜，向栗子林進(jìn)發(fā)。
How the frost has opened the burs!
秋霜把刺果打開了那么多！
It has done half their work for them already.
已經(jīng)幫他們干了一半的活兒。
How they laugh and sing, and shout to each other as they fill their baskets!
他們又笑又唱，一邊互相喊話，一邊把栗子往袋子里裝，多么快樂??！
The sun looks down through the yellow leaves; the rocks give them mossy seats;
太陽穿過金黃的葉子之間俯視著他們；巖石為他們準(zhǔn)備好鋪滿青苔的座位；
the birds and squirrels wonder what these strange people are doing in their woods.
小鳥和松鼠好奇地看著他們，不知道這些奇怪的人在它們的樹林里做什么。
Jeannette really helps, though she is only a little girl; and her father says at night, that his Jane is a dear, good child.
雖然珍妮特只是一個(gè)小姑娘，但卻是個(gè)好幫手；晚上她的父親說，小珍是個(gè)讓人疼愛的乖孩子。
This makes her very happy.
這讓她很高興。
She thinks about it at night, when she says her prayers.
晚上祈禱的時(shí)候，她想到了這些。
Then she goes to sleep to dream of the merry autumn days.
然后上床睡覺，做起了愉快的秋天之夢(mèng)。
Such is our little mountain sister, and here is a picture of her far-away home.
這就是我們的山妹子，這就是她那遙遠(yuǎn)的家的一個(gè)畫面。
The mountain life is ever a fresh and happy one.
山里的生活永遠(yuǎn)是新鮮而快樂的。
