In the Garden of Eden(1), planted by God,

There were goodly trees in the springing sod-

Trees of beauty and height and grace,

To stand in splendor before His face:

Apple and hickory, ash and pear,

Oak and beech, and the tulip rare,

The trembling aspen, the noble pine,

The sweeping elm by the river line;

蘋果樹(shù)和山核桃樹(shù)，白臘樹(shù)和梨樹(shù)，

橡樹(shù)和山毛櫸，還有珍貴的鵝掌楸，

搖曳的白楊，崇高的青松，

枝條依依的榆樹(shù)排列在河堤上，

Trees for the birds to build and sing,

And the lilac tree for a joy in spring;

Trees to turn at the frosty call

And carpet the ground for their Lord's footfall;

嚴(yán)霜降臨便變色凋零的樹(shù)

Trees for fruitage and fire and shade,

Trees for the cunning builder's trade;

Wood for the bow, the spear, and the flail,

The keel and the mast of the daring sail-

He made them of every grain and girth(2)

For the use of man in the Garden of Earth,

Then lest the soul should not lift her eyes

From the gift to the Giver of Paradise,

On the crown of a hill, for all to see,

God planted a scarlet maple tree.(3)

用以結(jié)果，生火和遮蔭的樹(shù)，

供能工巧匠建造房屋的樹(shù)，

可作彎弓、長(zhǎng)矛和連枷，

以及大船龍骨和桅桿的樹(shù)--

上帝把它們?cè)斓们ё税賾B(tài)，

為人類世界各盡其材。

他唯恐世人只知坐享天工

卻忘了賜予這一切的天堂之主，

于是在山頂上，讓人人有目共睹，

上帝栽下了紅彤彤的楓樹(shù)。

英文注釋：

(1)the Garden of Eden：伊甸園，《圣經(jīng)》中人類始祖亞當(dāng)與夏娃居住的地方。這里喻作樂(lè)園，與最后一節(jié)中的Garden of Earth相呼應(yīng)。

(2)of every grain and girth：是動(dòng)詞made的賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)。grain的本義為"紋理"，girth的本義為"(樹(shù)圍的)周長(zhǎng)"，這里用來(lái)表示各種樹(shù)的木質(zhì)和粗細(xì)不一，因而適宜于各種用途。

(3)Then lest...maple tree：這四行構(gòu)成一個(gè)主從復(fù)合句，god為主句的主語(yǔ)，planted a scarlet maple tree是謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞及其直接賓語(yǔ)。lest the soul should not lift her eyes from the gift to the Giver Of paradise是帶否定意義的目的狀語(yǔ)從句，lest含有"以防"和"以免"的意思，這種從句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞一般與should連用。
