十九世紀(jì)末，美國(guó)民間興起禁酒運(yùn)動(dòng)（temperance movement）。當(dāng)時(shí)發(fā)誓戒酒的人說(shuō)，即使酒癮難熬，也不會(huì)破戒。寧愿爬到賣(mài)水車(chē)（water wagon）上喝水。于是，on the（water）wagon（上水車(chē)）就等于“戒酒”了，假如敵不住酒癮，從水車(chē)上走下來(lái)喝酒破戒，那叫做go off the （water）wagon。
