十九世紀末，美國民間興起禁酒運動（temperance movement）。當時發(fā)誓戒酒的人說，即使酒癮難熬，也不會破戒。寧愿爬到賣水車（water wagon）上喝水。于是，on the（water）wagon（上水車）就等于“戒酒”了，假如敵不住酒癮，從水車上走下來喝酒破戒，那叫做go off the （water）wagon。
